Elated at the mage's death, the first death of the fight no less, Led nonetheless realizes how dangerous his position is. Wedged between the two attackers, he wouldn't be able to effectively charge without taking a beating. So, he dashes away to better assault his enemies later.

wayfriend wrote:

Then there are some books, not really a series, but which have a common main character, Jorj X. McKie. These books demonstrate a fondness for a sharp and tricky legal mind. McKie works for "the Bureau of Sabotage", whose noble goal is to prevent beaurocracies from growing too large and cumbersome by throwing in monkeywrenches where they see fit. You might therefore think Herbert is anti-beaurocracy ... until you think about it. The Gawachin in this series, which Herbert clearly admires, have an unusual system of law in which lawyers put their lives on the line to try cases.

"The Dosadi Experiment" was one of those...that book is terrific. And it's not just the Lawyers...the Judges can be killed mid-trial, and being "found innocent" is generally a very bad outcome [I think the populace tends to kill you once you leave the courtroom, IIRC].
There are parallels to Dune-thought. The "protagonists" are subjected to an environment so extreme that the average janitor is a demon from hell compared to most people, lack of self-discipline equals death, [as the Fremen], and an outsider who can become "more native than the natives" is the hero. [survival/self-discipline/freedom/adaptability].
I think you're mistaken on the Sabotuers role though: it isn't to prevent the cumbersome nature of bureaucracy, it is because bureaucracy has become so precise, refined, and efficient it will govern everything and trample freedom/intelligence that the sabotage is necessary [if I recall correctly, the bureau actually has to sabotage itself]. That has some Dune parallels, too. [Bureaucracy/God Emporer's gov't].
I agree, though, that Herbert's thought is extremely difficult to tack a label on. The series that includes "The Jesus Incident" has quite a different feel/tone/attitude, but still some overlapping territory.
_________________
I can't find a reason why I should justify my ways;
I don't need a reason, you don't need to lie to me.

There, in the midst of it so alive, so alone
Words support like bone...dreaming of Mercy Street.

Subject: Re: Time Enough for Love
Posted: Fri Jul 30, 2010 10:18 pm (GMT 0)

Rigel wrote:

Well, Heinlein certainly was subtle, wasn't he?.

One question, though: what are we to make of the ending? Literal interpretation of the statements by the characters, or they're just being supportive?

	Spoiler:

"Maureen?" Lazarus murmured.
"I'm here, darling," Tamara answered.
...
"Just a dream, Beloved. You cannot die."

Given that Lazarus explicitly stated he didn't know what became of Maureen, are we to understand that she really is Tamara? Especially since the previous page ("You are you, playing chess with yourself, and again you have checkmated yourself") seems to lend credence to the immortality bit...

...or is it supposed to be something along the lines of reincarnation, that Lazarus is every human in turn? There are certainly parts of the book where he goes back and forth between talking about another person, and talking as if he is that person...

...or is it none of those, and Tamara was just comforting him with the typical "Don't die!" type of comment?

I too am a hopeless romantic. So when I found sections of this book to be uncomfortable reading I forcibly turned a blind eye to them on the gut feeling that I'd miss out on a highly fantastic vision.

One thing was always in the back of my mind - Lazarus Long was a liar: not to deceive but to reveal.

One other thing about Heinlen and his contemporaries, is that they were essentially minimalists. They say more by revealing less.
For example, the population of New Rome wasn't as much as I thought it could be, for a city in 4032 (or whatever!!!). So why did the family have to go outdoors armed. This is too much like the old American wild-west. In a futuristic landscape the population should be millions. So perhaps it was only the population of the "Howards" that was the most important fact.
At least this gives my imagination free reign to explore other possibilities!

	Spoiler:

So, was Tamara, Maureen? I'd yes, and no. Both could work towards a complete story arc.

Did L.L. become his own father?

I don't think so. It's too gross!
But the implications are there.
L.L. tells lies, right, so when he drove Maureen to the park what if she really wasn't pregnant. The kid in the trunk was carried into the back seat where he curled up into a featous (sp?) position. Maureen throws a blanket over him and they drive on to Electric Park.
Conclusion: he really nicked the kid's toy elephant. He needed it as a memory item, in addition to Maureen's gifts.

I think his true love was Dora. His trip back in time was to solve the problem of getting her out of the computer and back into the real world.

These are just some of my initial impressions on the story. I'd need to let the dust settle on this book, as someday I'd love to read it again.
Wayfriend, very interesting.
_________________
Meaning is created internally by each individual in each specific life: any attempt at *meaning* which relies on some kind of external superstructure (God, Satan, the Creator, the Worm, whatever) for its substance misses the point (I mean the point of my story). -SRD

Remain faithful to the earth, my brothers, with the power of your virtue. Let your gift-giving love and your knowledge serve the meaning of the earth.. . .Do not let them fly away from earthly things and beat with their wings against eternal walls. Alas, there has always been so much virtue that has flown away. Lead back to the earth the virtue that flew away, as I do–back to the body, back to life, that it may give the earth a meaning, a human meaning. -Nietzsche

do you ever wake up, tears
in your eyes. sitting in the
dark, careful not to wake up
your spouse. and do you sit
there in the dark, wishing you

could smoke. trying hard to
not think about the one you
hurt. the one who could never
forgive you. and do you wish
that you could take it all back.
and then end up in front of the
bathroom mirror, wondering...
who i slooking back at you....
can you sing for him, voice cracked
with smoke an dbeer, fumbling
for the right chord. does he hold you
close in the rain, kissing you raw.
when you ever think of me, do you
feel lonely. when it gets cold, will you
Can you point me towards where you asked me this? I can't find it.

First page of the thread, post 11.

Syl wrote:

Quote:

Again, not really sure what you're talking about. The legal document that I posted (the actual complaint) is claiming religious discrimination in this case.

And I said earlier that religious discrimination isn't a good fit. It's discrimination against behavior that arises from religious convictions. It's possible to be very anti-human sacrifice without being anti-P.A.G.A.N.

First of all, mad props for the Dragnet reference (love that movie).

Whether or not you believe that religious discrimination is a good fit isn't the issue. That's the nature of the legal complaint. Wise move on the part of the plaintiffs, as it makes it a 1st Amendment issue. But again, you keep mentioning behavior....There's none to take issue with, all she's done is talk about her beliefs.

[quote="Syl"]

Syl wrote:

Again, this should be obvious since there are presumably no other conservative Christians being denied degrees at ASU. Similarly, I'd hope a New-Earther would be denied a degree in Evolutionary Biology. People can believe whatever crazy shit they want to, but it's nobody's responsibility to help them do so.

Why though? No one's "helping them believe" crazy shit. As I said, less than 25 years ago, homosexuality was dealt with in deviant psychology/sociology courses. Now you and I can (probably) agree that that's some crazy shit, but does that mean that the University of Maryland either shouldn't have given me a degree if I though homosexuality was genetic? Should they recall all their degrees they issued during that time period now that conventional wisdom has changed?

Syl wrote:

Quote:

An employer can choose to hire based on her skill set and her specialty.....She's choosing to specialize in a very narrow field of therapy.

Then she should take her credits to a school that wants to certify that kind of therapy. If, as has been pointed out, other people are doing this, it shouldn't be a problem. I still say it's weird that this is at ASU (Athens I could maybe understand). Makes me think she must really be a nut.

Again, I stipulate that she may well be a nut, but if the University didn't make this clear to her prior to her entering the program (which you'd think her faculty advisor would have), then they have no grounds to deny her what she's earned.

Syl wrote:

Quote:

Since we're still talking about what's actually transpired rather than future theoreticals, we're talking about the school's position on her beliefs (she's never actually practiced her form of therapy, only spoken about it in the abstract of a classroom).

Or it could be on the school's position on how her beliefs will affect her practice.

Could be, but that's inappropriate. Denying a degree because of what might happen in the future? Come on, no way that passes the BS test.

Syl wrote:

Quote:

And it seems pretty clear that a public institution has no business telling students what they can or can't believe.

She's welcome to believe whatever she wants. If she was getting a Rel. Studies degree, this wouldn't be an issue. A university has every right telling a person what they should know, however.

According to every article I've read, she knows the subject matter, and has passing grades. The only thing being questioned are her religious beliefs. That doesn't pass muster.

Subject: Re: Frank Herbert anti-Statist or something else?

SerScot wrote:

What does everyone think? Is Frank Herbert a libertarian who arose among the leftist literature of the Sixties? Who would disagree with this assesment and why?

I would say that I have read a lot of Frank Herbert's books, many more than the Dune series.

The Dune universe is complex. The galactic government, if anything, is monarchial, with a distinct ruling class. These guys seem more or less at the mercy of manipulative forces, such as the Guild (economic), the Bene Geserit (social engineering), Ix (technologic), etc. Then there's Paul Atriedes.

I'm not sure what you can deduce about Herbert's politics from this. All of these are played as good, bad, or neutral at one time or another.

Yes, there are examples of oppressive cultures. However, they are meant to be oppressive, as part of what drives the plot. I think anyone, of any politics, would find them to be so.

However, there are other Herbert stories that are much more political.

White Plague stands out for me as the most political. It's, among other things, a scathing attack on terrorism and terrorists. In the time it was written, decades before 9/11, when groups like the IRA and the PLO had many sympathizers and apologists, it was rather profound.

Soul Catcher is the story about an native American Indian who abducts a small boy to ritually murder him. Herbert writes this on the side of the Indian, makes you see why it is necessary. Politically, I think this exposes Herbert's tendency to consider individual human lives of less importance than transcendent ideas. On the other hand, also too is an ability to see value in other cultures.

Herbert, to my mind, has so many aspects that do not fit a conservative model or a liberal one. I don't think you can pin him down.

He did, however, work as a speechwriter for three or four Republican politicians. All of whom lost. You might therefore think Herbert was a Republican ... until you think about it.
_________________

hmmm...
I like orogeny from the Last C's.

But desuetude from the first.
_________________
I can't find a reason why I should justify my ways;
I don't need a reason, you don't need to lie to me.

There, in the midst of it so alive, so alone
Words support like bone...dreaming of Mercy Street.
What God wants, God gets, God help us all.
mansuetude
_________________
It is the awareness and resultant mindfulness of our linkage which instills the secret of meaning, significance, joy and inner peace. The absence of such consciousness inevitably drives a person to the edge of madness – a madness that transmutes into nihilism, depression, megalomania, and plain bitterness. ~Laibl Wolf
