feeling sad - my mom passed away early monday (March 8 2010) from demential related issues. Really a terrible way to go, but now she is at peace. Every day was a struggle for her and me & my family.
Thankfully she is beyond that now & at peace with the Lord & the universe - she was a good soul. RIP

Other changes: to some confusion with real-life people of the same name, the NPC formerly known as Paul will now be known as Pierre. I've edited all posts in the thread to reflect this. It is not out of the possibility that I will slip up and write Paul in some future post. This is merely an error on my part; please bring it to my attention, and it will be fixed.

Seska places the fresh bottle on the table, "Here we are. A bit of nectar for us and a poultice for our little lady's hair."

She has Sabine sit sideways in a chair and lean back into the bowl in her lap. Seska massages it into the hair and scalp as best she can, then wraps it in one of the damp towels and lifts her back up. "All done for now." She licks the side of her left finger. "Mmmm. This also makes for a wonderful baste for roast fowl." Seska waggles a finger at Sabine. "No entering the kitchen lest you get mistaken for tomorrow's meal."

Seska heads into the dining room, where Vida and Sabine have just arrived at the table. Sabine is still rubbing the robe on her face and ignoring the rest of the room, while Vida gets her situated.

Lothar approaches Olaf and greets him in passable Norse, though with a slight accent of Russia. "My Lord Claudius greets you and bids you welcome to the domain of his clan. I expect that Sigismond is treating you well, yes?"

Pierre has returned to his table farther from the fire, not wanting to intrude into the Countess' dinner.

*shrug* We already have something similar here. And have had my whole life. You apply for it when you're 16, they take your prints, and that's that. Your ID number is pretty much a requirement for any official thing. Hell, it used to effectively be law that you carry it with you, although that's fallen away now that drivers licenses are seperate cards. (They used to be printed in your ID book.)

It doesn't make any difference, or affect my life.

Yep, distasteful as it is, they can say and think whatever they like.

As for the other two cases, they strike me as ridiculous. Why should vaccine makers be immune from law suits? And how can they justify preventing background checks? I'd think they were pretty important. And anything that is a matter of public record can't be considered breach of privacy, can it?

I like my speech pretty free thanks.

That doesn't make it a golden age of humanity though, does it? It would be a golden age if everybody on earth had the same opportunities and access to what they need as people living comfortably in a free "western" society. (And of course, plenty of people in those societies are not living comfortably.)

However, in general, I agree with the premise. Things are, on average, better than they have been in the past. Our task is to encourage the spread of that improvement so that we can indeed aspire to a golden age for all humanity.

OK, so obviously mind set is there.
And you have already responded to it with veal.
I believe your first step is to think the same thoughts when a craving for meat of other types hit. Even if it is totally prepared and you are about to take a bite. Try to picture that which is motivating you to try to give it up.

As far as the switchover itself...
I am also of the belief that using "meat" substitutes make it more difficult. That is how I came up with my Carrot Dogs instead of eating vegetarian hot dog substitutes. Besides the fact that I find the vegetarian rubbery, the carrot is a totally different base taste and texturally for the condiments I then layer on top. Yet it really works!

And that is what I would suggest. When it is a specific type of meat dish you crave, find a vegetarian alternative, but one different enough that you don't try to compare it to what triggered the craving. Comparing only reinforces the craving.

Um, they already know your height, your weight, your eye color, your address, your soc and your image. What's the hooplah about a finger print? (I mean, aside from the "OMG, the guv'ment is out to get me!!" mentality.) I don't see how it could make anyone feel like a criminal any more than giving a fingerprint for a check at a bank.
They have about the same "right" to my finger prints than they do my eye color, or my blood type (I'm sure someone has it) but I don't see people getting up in arms about those being on record.
I'll take "OMG fingerprints" seriously when people start pushing for ID reform to remove our pictures... hmm, maybe something new for the teabaggers to think about...

I am very willing to discuss this. Please, all of you, go easy on me, I am an admitted bleeding heart.

My issue is completely and consistently a feeling that eating meat is immoral. It is not so much the act of eating meat as much as the cruelty I see in the slaughter of these animals. When I lived upstate I used to see how they kept the veal calves. It was horrible. I have not eaten veal in 20 years. I have seen slaughter houses and they are a nightmare.

I have lost 100 pounds, my health is better than it has been in 20 years, my diabetes is gone, my cholesterol and blood pressure are down. I am ready to take the next step and begin to remove the pollutants from my body.

I no longer wish to contribute to this insanity. Becoming a vegetarian is not something I am just thinking about now. I have been trying to stop eating meat for years and years.

I'm a vagatatrian, but I guess that doesn't help us much here.

If you like the taste of meat, why exclude it from a well balanced diet? You said you "need" to stop- is it a medical need, or do you just want to?

I'm no longer vegetarian, but I was for several years when I first left home, lorin. One thing I always believed about making the adjustment is your reasons why you want to give up meat. I feel the mental reasoning makes a big difference in the commitment. It becomes a way of life if the reasons resonate with you, rather than a diet.

Are you willing to discuss that?
Or do you only want to concentrate on switching over?

heh, looks like LF and I are sort of on the same mind-set.
