Did he command his armies? Can't remember. I remember him joining up after Joyce gave him the opportunity to exact revenge on the (Cadwal? Alend?) who raped his wife, but don't remember if it specifies his position.

Each Care commands its own army, maybe it's even a feudal system down to regional lords within each Care but when they finally march to war, Castelan Norrick commands Mordant's army. So the Castelan of Orrison is the commander in chief of the king's army.

I agree with this, Avatar. The Castellan is the commander-in chief.

I always assumed he was the captain of the castle guard / whatever. Historically, a castellan managed a castle, so that was always the interpretation I put on the rank.
