The attack wasn't an action of Afghanistan's government though, was it? (I suppose you didn't actually declare war on them, but I think that in some senses that actually makes it worse.)

There was a large blast in Kabul the other day.

Quote:
In Afghanistan, the death toll in Wednesday's massive truck bomb attack in Kabul has risen to 90, with over 400 people wounded, as Afghans mourn one of the worst single attacks since the U.S. invaded in 2001. No group has claimed responsibility for the bombing, which struck a busy intersection in the heart of the Afghan capital during the morning rush, flattening buildings, damaging embassies and shattering windows at the presidential palace. Many survivors blamed the government for failing to provide security.

Enayatullah Mohammadi: "We ask our leaders to ensure security in the country, or if they are not able to ensure security for us, we say they must resign. There should be someone in power who serves the country. Right now, thousands of our people are in mourning. Why and how much longer should we suffer from this current situation?"

On Thursday, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani issued a decree ordering the execution of 11 prisoners from the Taliban and the Haqqani network, which officials blamed for the attack.

Currently, those of us not working in intelligence for that region have insufficient information from which to draw any conclusions as to who might have done it or why they did it.

Which is interesting in itself...usually these groups fall over each other in the rush to claim responsibility.

Quote:
Evaluating Trump's Afghanistan Plan

Donald Trump tweeted in 2013, let's get out of Afghanistan. Our troops are being killed by the Afghanis we train, and we waste billions there - nonsense. This week, President Trump announced what he called a new strategy. But it includes sending a few thousand more U.S. troops to Afghanistan, increasing U.S. Special Forces missions and no fixed goal for withdrawal from a country where the U.S. has had combat troops for 16 years.

That said, the article (transcript of a radio show really) concludes that it's actually the right move to make. (At least in terms of the troop stuff. The other things, like not trying to build up the country, are perhaps open to question.

Yeah but following his most recent announcement about the middle east I think he's been convinced to continue the course (that actually Obama also had to), increasing troop numbers etc. Well you all know you heard the speech.

It was laughable the way he introduced each move as it was revelatory and new .. but that's Trump for you.

I read an article about Afghanistan that conceeded that no one expects to 'win' the war there. In Afghanistan the simple maintenance of the existing stalemate is as close to winning as you ever get. Countless armies have discovered this to their cost in the past.

Agreed, and nobody seems to have learned the lesson. 16 years in,it's now the US's longest running "war." (Or police action, or whatever the hell they call it these days.)

(Hell, it occurs to me, in a couple of years, the US soldiers being sent there will not have been born yet when it started.)

We sent our first military advisors to Vietnam to support the French back in 1955, meaning that our involvement there was really Eisenhower's fault. Still, that assessment is not inaccurate--we will soon have boots on the ground who weren't born in a time when we didn't have boots there.

Isn't this part of what eventually killed Rome? Spreading the military too thinly and trying to be in control everywhere? Didn't that start to bleed them dry financially?

Well, it was a contributing factor, certainly.

I thought Trump was against the USA involvement in Afghanistan? Didn't I read somewhere that he is going to increase troop numbers there?

He was originally, and campaigned on "bringing the boys home" but seems he was convinced that it would be a bad idea.

It has indeed been that long (well, only a month or two short of the full 16 years but who counts months?). The only reason we went there was because bin Laden was hiding out there at the time after having been essentially kicked out of every other country. Technically, that conflict ended in December of 2014 but as long as we still have boots on the ground I count that conflict as "ongoing".

In the long run, history will boil this whole era down to "a tragic waste of lives and money for minimal return".
