THEN I was listening to a book I'd read previously...and by a good reader!...
and I was CONSTANTLY distracted by "WHY THE FUCK did s/he read that THAT way???? THAT's not what it says/means!!!" "Why is that woman read like a whiny teen??? She's a fucking PRO!"
Etc. etc. etc.
So I won't listen to any book that isn't shallow/light/unimportant to me...like I'll listen to classic rock stations as long as I'm just killing time, not hoping for music.

I've sorta already experienced that! But it doesn't bother me with books that aren't as important to me. Monte Cristo had a bunch of accents that the reader used to distinguish the French from the Italian etc, and the translation was way different to the one that I had read in the past. Still, I enjoyed it because it's a great story, I can listen to it while driving, there's no way I'd read a 1200 page book in the timeframe I listened to it, and I can still read my fantasy at night.

David Copperfield has a similar "adjustment" as I have read that before too. Some of the characters are portrayed in a completely different way to my reading interpretation. But once again, the story is great, and it isn't hugely important to me.

SRD on the other hand, or other books that mean a lot to me could be a totally different experience. In my limited experience, it seems that the narrator is everything when it comes to a good audiobook.

Reading Wicked because Dam-sel, Menolly, and I have tickets to a production of the play later this month.

I previously read it some years ago and found it a bit of a slog. I know Gregory Maguire was well-regarded because of the novel, but it did not really hold me, although I did read the full book.

Trying again, while pushing those impressions away. Trying to make sure I know the story, rather than be mystified by the play.

Have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don't search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.

"Only Yesterday: An Informal History of the 1920s," by Frederick Lewis Allen
and
"The Lantern Bearers" by Rosemary Sutcliff

Also, read "The Wounded Healer"* by Henri Nouwen... it seemed like a good idea of something to read after "1984."

* That does -not- say "TWL," speedreaders.

yezzzz... I've been slinking around the house reading books and wondering some things about what I should have done differently this past years' adventures... (not that this includes even one teeeensy, tiny drop of feeling sorry for myself)
...some things have been coming together a bit this past week... I hope to be around more.(?)
(but no guarantees of rocketing into the territory of a prolific poster!)

Oh, also, on an unrelated note, I started 'nother book: (w/out having finished any the others yet.)
I started reading "Mr. Lincoln's Army," by Bruce Catton. (U.S. Civil War history.)
It's part of the "Army of the Potomac" trilogy... The author of "Ender's Game" described it as a set of books that so characterized what makes good strategy / military leadership so as to have "ruined the game of Risk for him."
(I say this realizing that "Ender's Game" might be a book that, if you once liked, may have "lost its shine" for you, Sky.)

Anyway... this first "Army of the Potomac" book begins with a mess of different commanders waffling and quarreling, and I'm finding it pretty engaging.
