I love listening to all the music from back in the day (whatever era) but I've felt that I haven't found anything much that has grabbed me in recent times.

Anyone have any that I can try out?

New releases from old bands is acceptable Very Happy New bands would be even better.

You may have an idea of my musical taste, but I'm willing to give anything that you think is good a go.

This is going to be fun.

Personally I like a lot of Aussie music, but music aint music like oils aint oils. Ive sat in a number of Aussie indie artist recordings that my son does and we have some spectacular indie talent. But yes globally a lot of amazing commercial artists out there. But not knowing your tastes and preferences, some of my playlist go tos.

If instrumentals are your vibe:
Malcura mix
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iUdWaWD8d6M&list=RDEM2p9sAIOPn7reQtfeQrTIMg&index=5
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0_UsULOcivg&list=RDEM2p9sAIOPn7reQtfeQrTIMg&index=2

General pop rock I like George Ezra, 21 Pilots or if folkies are your vibe try Lumineers
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pTOC_q0NLTk

Pop rock?
5SOS
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PKcGR3hexig&list=PLgP_WFDJWjxRlfvx9dZfgvR9dQiVpTfOG&t=0s&index=2

Bebe Rexha

Hozier
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Irw04nbXwxk&list=PLMC9KNkIncKtsacKpgMb0CVq43W80FKvo&index=31

Ruel

Gang of Youths __
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5OpvDdVtYU&list=PLgP_WFDJWjxRlfvx9dZfgvR9dQiVpTfOG&index=16&t=0s

Hollow Coves

Imagine Dragons
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4ht80uzIhNs

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sENM2wA_FTg

Seafret
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uovlYyr4bVo
You cant go past Adele, Freya Ridings, Elise Legrow for some nice smoky jazz tunes
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oCuXXpcPpFA so, so much music and so, so much amazing talent

If death metals your thing someone else will have to be your go to 😉

I'm a bit of an old fuddy duddy when it comes to new music, but there have been a few that do it for me, and most have been musicians everybody's already heard of and I'm just catching up. Because I am becoming every father everywhere stuck in his old music. Most the new music I hear, I like for an album and then their second album disappoints, and every album from there on out. So I am bringing up people who have extended beyond the first album.

I like 21 Pilots, my wife is in love with Florence and the Machine. I dig Regina Spektor, but I suspect all of these are pre-2010, as well as the next group I would definitely recommend to you, StevieG, if you've not checked them out yet.

Walk Off The Earth - Yes, you may know them as the guys who did that superior version of the Gotye song "Somebody That I Used To Know" of them all playing the same guitar. If that is all you know of them, or their covers, you should really look into them more. They have a few albums out of their own material, and are surprisingly good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHvl6z56zGc - The one that made me wake up and take an interest in the band.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80KAX3pY1mE - This is kind of their Michael Jackson Thriller video, but instead of zombies, it is a stupid take on the Karate Kid. And it is hilarious and fun.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUAsGr6KM2E - My daughter's favorite. AKA - the sad one.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukigjUvwAR4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SOUwxaAmoAk - My favorite of their covers. I wasn't familiar with the song and then I heard it. This is FAR superior.

There's a heap. If you like any of these, prepare for a deep dive. They have a freakin' ton of songs on YouTube, and are wildly inventive. I think they usually elevate whatever the song is, and their videos are frequently amazing. I honestly don't get why they aren't bigger than they are, other than the "kumbaya" vibe they give off. Sadly, the beard guy died recently, and I really wonder how that is going to affect the band from here on out.

Sorry, spent all my time on one band. I'll get back on this again soon to further display how unhip I am.

Thanks for taking the time to link some music Very Happy Much appreciated.

No death metal in my repertoire so you're safe there Very Happy I'm not sure I can define my taste as such - I tend to steer away from commercial in general, but there are some I like. Back in the day, I did like the slightly heavier stuff: Tool, Nine Inch Nails etc. But I also love They Might be Giants, Eels, Queen, Muse and a million more oldies! I got stuck at the end of the nineties, and have eventually become every father! Although in the last few years, I have tried a bit harder (and my daughter loves new music, so I get a bit of a taste of new pop).

Malcura sounds amazing. They are very talented. I might have a look at them a bit more.

Pop rock not so much. I like some of it. 21 Pilots is ok to my ears, but I got bored fairly quickly. Lumineers - ok, 5SOS - too commercial for my taste. Same with Beb Rexha, Hozier and Ruel. Gang of Thieves I like a bit more, there's a bit more to it. Hollow Coves sounds very pleasant - I'd potentially look into them a bit more. Imagine Dragons sounds decent. Seafret - meh. But I do like Elise LeGrow - more home grown feel to it.

I'm probably more into Indie stuff in general, but completely open to most stuff. Walk off the Earth are definitely my type! I love the music videos and the music in general. I must admit I'd never heard of them (even the Gotye cover - but that is a real winner). I'll definitely check them out more. People that do something interesting and inventive.

Thanks - if you have more suggestions, keep them coming Very Happy

StevieG - I've known this for some time, but I think we share pretty similar musical tastes. I think we both crave something different and different ways of approaching stuff, and little odd idiosyncrasies in music. Such as, not so much the sound of a particular REM song, but the part of the song when Michael Stipe's voice cracks and they leave it in on the recording. I might be misinterpreting, but I get the feel that you get a charge out of that too. And that you tend to prefer smart things to dumb things.

These are a couple older things I think you should check out if you are unfamiliar with them.

Game Theory/Loud Family - Particularly The Loud Family, if you can find their stuff. Plants And Birds And Rocks And Things is pretty much a perfect album from them with favorites that shift. Scott Miller was the genius of those groups. He has a very distinctive singing style that I love. Other Loud Family goodness is Interbabe Concern and Attractive Nuisance. These are experimental 90s albums, so they might feel pretty comfortable while also feeling exotic. Game Theory is little more poppy 80s, but still a little experimental. Big Shot Chronicles is my favorite, and Lolita Nation is wonderfully experimental, but like most experimental things, not every song works, and has taken me years to fully appreciate. I think they are being re-issued since Scott took his own stupid life, and the Big Shot Chronicles copy I bought recently has definite sound issues. And don't get the live album until you are a fan.

Regina Spektor - She has smoothed her style a lot lately and not nearly as quirky as her early albums, but she still manages to annoy my wife. The album Far is when her style smoothed and when I had it recommended enough that I finally picked up something from her. Soviet Kitsch is maybe the most experimental, and most of the experiments work. Begin To Hope is album that I most had recommended to me. She does stuff with vocals that nobody else does, and is definitely awesome with lyrics - hilarious, poetic, and occasionally heartbreaking, and often within the same song. Lyrically, I think this is my favorite:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pxRXP3w-sQ

Looking back over the artists I have liked lately, it is usually an album that I get REALLY excited about, and their second album sounds too similar and I'm over them. Like Mumford & Sons (Attorneys At Law). Fell hard for the first album, then the second came out and it just didn't do it for me.

Ida Maria's album Fortress Round My Heart is amazing, and I just noticed there are more albums out from her, so I know where some of my iTunes gift card is going to. Hopefully as good as the first.

I like Phoenix, but only like like.

Lizzo has an amazing voice from what I've heard, but she has only just crossed my path. She's a little screamy for me, but there is no denying her talent.

Now I feel like I need to check out suggestions from you, Stevie. Are you excited about anything new?

Excellent stuff! I should have created this thread years ago - I almost feel guilty about the amount of music that is out there that I would like but know nothing about.

When I got my new iPhone a year or so ago, it came with a subscription to Apple Music for 6 months. And of course their marketing worked and now I pay my $11.99 a month to keep it going. It has the advantage of being able to type in a band or a song and in a good number of cases, I can listen to some of their music.

Cags, I remember writing you a PM years ago about They Might Be Giants, and asking about what album I should get. Yes I think we definitely have similar musical taste - I hadn't thought much about what I like in music, but I think you have described it well. I definitely crave the uniqueness that some musicians bring to the table. There are so many major talents out there, and it's what they do with it that makes all the difference. I remember hearing the first Oasis song and thinking it sounded great, and then hearing some more and completely being turned off them.

I've been trying out heaps of the suggestions from this thread - Sky, I've been going through your Indie list, and there are some great ones there. I like the sound of Omnific and Voyager a lot. I'm still going through the list. Very Happy

Interestingly, I do a bit of driving and so get a chance to put some music on, and I found that the Walk off the Earth album Sing it All Away wasn't really to my taste in the end, but I much preferred R.E.V.O. I do like their Christmas songs though! I've also been listening to the Loud Family - it has a nice familiar 90s sound (especially guitars) but with some great quirkiness and experimentation. Unfortunately I haven't been able to listen to Plants and Birds and Rocks and Things - it doesn't seem to be on Apple Music - but I'm really enjoying Interbabe Concern so far. It's comfortably confronting Very Happy I like a band the stuffs around with time signatures. It looks like it's on Spotify, so I'll have a listen to that one too.

As for my new acquisitions - things are a little lean! I probably have some to suggest but will have to think on it. An old band with new stuff that I really like is Puscifer - I crapped on about it at length in this thread Very Happy They have grown as a band, and are all just amazing musicians. Related to this is A Perfect Circle - again, and old band with a new release. Not all songs are worthy, but they do some great stuff - this one is from their new release So long and thanks for all the fish - devastating music video, but a good song. Another one from their new release is Hourglass, probably best appreciated with a good sound system.

A good friend of mine has shared my musical taste over the decades, with some variations of course. He is really into Alt-j - I'm still deciding whether I like them, but this song is interesting In Cold Blood. I'm not much of a fan of Iggy Pop's introduction but the song itself isn't bad.

I'm still searching though. Thanks Sky and Cags, you have already enhanced my existence!

Sing It All Away has grown on me, but R.E.V.O. is definitely superior. Musically, I think Walk Off The Earth is very radio friendly, to use a musical snob-ass term, but R.E.V.O. especially feels raw and fun. With Taekwondo, it feels like they are getting back to a bit of the silly and thankfully aren't musically crawling up their own butts like I feared after Sing It All Away. I hope their next album demonstrates a bit more of that kind of joy that led me to them in the first place.
I'm glad you are digging The Loud Family. Hopefully you can find a copy of their best album and one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time. It looks like they have it on YouTube so you can see if you like it enough to track down a copy. I still find it an amazing album.
I don't use this term for many people, but I honestly would call Scott Miller a musical genius. He has woefully been underappreciated throughout his life, and in another dimension he would be a big big hit. But not being may have kept him hungry and trying to find what will land with people. He is FIERCELY intelligent, and was one of the first "celebrities" to communicate with his fans via the internet. He had something at his site that kept me coming back called "Ask Scott" that was interesting, ponderous and hilarious and demonstrates his amazing brain outside of music. Rarely is there a "yeah, this and this. Next!" response. Never got a chance to see him live, and I regret it.
Definitely going to check out your suggestions. I don't have sound at work so I'll have to remember and get on Kevin's Watch at home, which typically doesn't happen.
I used to get CMJ magazine and it was the best at pointing me toward new music, but they stopped making it and went online and I didn't follow them. I don't listen to the radio so mostly I just listen to stuff at home. For a few years now, I've been playing a bit of catch-up at the library, but most of the stuff I find doesn't do it for me. That's mostly where I find my new stuff other than Rock Band releases. Smile

Given a bit of time, it looks like Walk off the Earth has become a bit of a family hit. My daughter has really taken to them, particularly their covers which I think are excellent for the most part.

Yay! Glad to hear it. They are big in my family as well. But I'm edgy, so now I must hate them.

First of all, thank you so, so much for bringing up this topic! At first had trouble coming up with any much, but then thought of... well, a lot. And then also went to look up some artists I knew, and found some more awesome new music... some of it feels absolutely fantastic! Very HappyVery HappyVery Happy Well, not sure if anyone else is going to think so, but I'm definitely happy about doing this Smile

Some of these fit with a bit of a stretch, but I understood from the above that things like that - new songs by old artists/covers (linked originals for a few likely unknown)/remakings and the like were ok enough. Some of the songs are actually ancient old, like more than a hundred years old Smile All fresh variations of course. And some are actually all brand new.

I didn't add much detail, just tried to list a few examples for each, and wrote some warnings for the especially risky content - could miss some, if so, sorry, but tried to recall the most jarring ones at least. Or would you like some extra information?

Also some of these are not in English (mostly Ukrainian and Russian), brought those here too in hopes something might be interesting for the music or other virtues Smile Well, and some in English don't have much lyrics possible to hear... Didn't write the warnings on those for the lyrics content, or should I?

And was going to bring here Imagine Dragons and Hozier too, but I see already done, thanks Skyweir!

Oh, and I actually brought some death metal too Smile

StarKid (Corey Dorris & others) - Pays to be an Animal https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxKCX-UvPrI&t=2247 Warning: swearing, disturbing (though more like weird) lyrics/spoken text, descriptions of supposedly animalistic behavior etc.
