Kirk, easily.
I don't think I was ever a real fan of Picard. (I'm more a fan of Janeway. In fact, way more. I'd rather be lost in space with her Voyager crew than be stuck with Picard's Enterprise crew.) |

James Tiberius Kirk. My hero..... _________________ An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego.
The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.
The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.”
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”
The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.” |

Sorry, there were only two captains of the Enterprise, Pike and Kirk. I don't know enough about Pike to make a determination about him.
Kirk by default. _________________ "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." - PJ O'Rourke

Good point about Q and the Borg...maybe it's not so much Picard that I'm harsh on, but rather his crew. Data was the only one I could say I liked; the others I found too annoying on a regular basis (and I wasn't even a regular TNG viewer). |

I'm having a hard time remembering when exactly Picard defeated the Borg.
Were they ever defeated?
Janeway may have done more to help defeat the Borg as a race than Picard ever could have.
Last I remember, Picard turned tail and ran. _________________ "Simony... blah blah... "

I'll take Picard over Kirk in this poll, but the absolute best was Sisko. _________________

Kirk was a maverick, that appeals to me. Picard was an empty uniform. Pike was accidentally turned into a quadriplegic who can only move forward, backward slightly, and beep once for yes and twice for no, and he ultimately had to be saved from this torment by Spock. I don't understand how Pike was left out of this poll, he did manage to escape from the aliens on Talos IV the first time, after all. _________________ "Simony... blah blah... "

Kirk was THE Captain of the Enterprise.
Picard was OK but he couldnt tie his shoes without asking someone at Starfleet.
Kirk had to make decisions on the spot that had ramifications throughout the Federation and he usually didnt ask for permission first. _________________ "He torments himself sufficiently."

Yeah, but he didn't take much counsel either, and although one person must take on the burden of the final choice, one person's viewpoint is very, very limited... _________________ Sunshine Music

Sorry, I'll take Kirk's damn-the-torpedoes, bone anything that moves approach over the lame, permission-asking pretender on TNG. Hell, Janeway had a bigger sack than Picard.
When the poop hits the fan, I know which captain I'd want calling the shots. And I don't care that he wears a girdle and a rug. Well, at least you'd win if it were a women-eating contest for the fate of the universe!

I have to disagree. Kirk accepted the counsel of McCoy and Spock on numerous occasions. |
