Chaos and Order is also my recollection...but do not have the books at work...

Have patience with everything unresolved in your heart and to try to love the questions themselves as if they were locked rooms or books written in a very foreign language. Don't search for the answers, which could not be given to you now, because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps then, someday far in the future, you will gradually, without even noticing it, live your way into the answer.

I think that is probably correct. I think there was some version of the story in FK, but the whole truth doesn't come out until later.

For shame. How many times have I read these books? I used to be so good at remembering details. Must be getting old...

For some reason [i'd check but my books are 1000 miles away] the "answer" in full is in 4 or 5...my memory says shortly before or after Nick persuading the rest to let him go solo after your namesake's ship. But my memory is bouncy not linear.

That makes sense. I don't know why my memory tied it to Billingate and book 3.

That incident is definitely in 4 (C&O).
It cannot be in 5 (TDAGD) for reasons I will not specify...but that proceed directly from the incident referenced.
