Meh, no accounting for taste I suppose. Look, I don't hate Tom Petty by any stretch, but he's not HoF material.

And the whole point of this thread is that the HoF is a joke for exactly that reason. Is Petty on the same level as Zeppelin, Floyd, Sabbath, Skynyrd, or Purple? Absolutely not.

The same reason Jeff Hostettler isn't going to make it into the Football Hall of Fame. Good player, but not the cream of the crop.

You dirty rat. A proper NFL comparison would be Art Monk. A steady and great role player who was the top of his game for years. Not a 1 or 2 year wonder like JH.

I would easily say that Petty and his freakin' marvelous band (those dudes are ALL OVER other people's CDs..and in fact are responsible for some great hits on thier own...case in point: The Song "Boys of Summer" is written, produced and most of the instruments are played by Petty's guitar player, the vastly underrated Mike Campbell) are indeed on the same par with Sabbath and Purple, and in fact surpass the likes of Skynyrd, who really lacked creativity. Don't get me wrong, me likee the LS, but they are sorta linear.

no. Petty is not as good as Skynyrd. he is a nice journeyman who has had a decent career. of course I would put Purple in there either. but like sports halls of fame, once you lower the bar you end up with Phil Rizzuto or Boston in the HoF.

A journeyman is a good way to describe Petty. Nothing spectacular, and you pretty much know what you're going to get whenever he releases an album, but damn consistant.

But Guns, not even you can defend Petty getting in before Deep Purple.

Smoke on the Water gets you in the Hall? Frankly, none of your recommendations has had any effect on the direction that music has taken historically Cail. You keep redefining rock and roll to suit your own tastes, which is fine, don't get me wrong, but just because every aspiring guitarist out there learned Smoke on the Water as their first song doesn't make DP legendary or influential. It was the EASIEST song to learn, thats all. I love every band you have mentioned, but really, none of them changed anything, they were just good to listen to.....

What about Run DMC? They were the first rap band to combine rap with hard rock riffs. They certainly gave the Beastie Boys ideas....

Run DMC should be in the rap hall of fame. but if the are responsible for rap/metal they should be banned from even visiting the HoF.

I got to say the nay-no both The Beasties and Run DMC. Love 'em both, but neither are rock (though they certainly are rock-influenced).

Run DMC is also disqualified for making Aerosmith popular again.

Aerosmith was only a good bar band and only when drunk or high. the crap they have been pumping out the last decade or more is utter crap.

Aerosmith haters....Well, my love for Aerosmith could be influenced by the fact that I have had a sick crush on Steven Tyler since my teen years....stop gagging you guys, it's a chick thing....we love things that are so ugly they become cute again....we can't help it, it's wired into us so we won't drown our own offspring...

I love rap, and jazz, and salsa, and swing, and classical, and hiphop, and rock, and funk, and the list goes on. About the only thing I don't care that much for is country western. For me, music is all about my mood. One moment I might be in the mood for a little Beasties and the next it might all be about Mel Torme....

I dig the riff, but I must admit I am unfamiliar with their body of work. Hence, I will not judge.

Don't get me wrong Petty is no Dylan or Springsteen, but his work has a lot of influence that is now being felt. He is on par I believe to someone like Neil Young in terms of influence and such. 'nuff said.

Ohhhhhh.....Danlo's gonna kick yer butt for comparing TP to Neil.

Purple was one of those bands that had an amazing body of work and was chock-full 'o brilliant musicians. Machine Head is still regarded as one of the greatest proto-metal albums extant.

No way is Petty on the level of Young, on any level, in my opinion.

Not even close.

No, and it's not why you think.

Not to dis those bands at all, but they're not rock 'n roll. They fall into the same sort of catagory as Run DMC; they're influenced by rock, but went in a different direction.
