OK. Just finished The Real Story and I'm about 3/4 of the way through Forbidden Knowledge.
I've bought A dark and Hungry God and it's on my 'to read' shelf.
But PLEASE can someone assure me that there's a (yes just ONE!) character in this series that can inspire me?
I absolutely refuse to read a series of books, even by an author that I respect as much as SRD, without a single character that I can admire.
PLEASE re-assure me! _________________ Aglithophile and conniptionist and spectacular moonbow beholder 16Jul11

I ended up admiring different qualities about most of the characters, but they're all badly flawed. I can reassure you, though, that there are, from memory, two characters who are out-and-out worthy of respect/admiration.
Hang in there! The Gap isn't easy, but it's worth it. _________________ "Tell me, young crone, is this Putney?"

The Gap series is a story of corruption and redemption.
There are characters that rise.
There are characters that fall.
There are characters that do both.
There are characters that do neither.

I found there were 2 characters I admired. Both of them because they were true to themselves and never made any concessions. They made mistakes, but they knew they'd made them and learnt from them. They were both also very "cool".
No prizes for guessing who they were. _________________

Like Cj said, different characters display different...characteristics which may or may not be admirable. The series is worth it regardless of who you like or hate. But believe me, it can be inspiring nonetheless.

They'll all piss you off more than once.(Even Warden who is my hunny bun, sugar plum, pumpy upmy upmkin.)
Anyway, despite the fact that it will seem like they all frustrate you more than reward you, it's still worth it.

| Angus gets better with each book. He doesn't do a whole lot in Forbidden, though. I just finished the series, and it gets better with each book imo, at least through the first 3. I'd rate RS a C+, FK a B+, Dark and Hung an A, Chaos an A/A+ and This Day an A/A+. Or something about like that. Oh, and I think Lane Harbinger is totally hot. Min Donner becomes a good character in the last two books, as well as Warden. |

Just finished FK and started then hungry god one. I'm intrigued that Warder Dios looks like being a 'goodie' when most of FK paints the UMCP as corrupt bastards.
And looking forward to Billingate..... _________________ Aglithophile and conniptionist and spectacular moonbow beholder 16Jul11

Billingate is like the point when everything suddenly comes together with a very large bang. For me it was like the turning point of the series when everything had finally been set up and SRD could start to run with the story. _________________ You do not hear, and so you cannot be redeemed.

Good post, VS. It's a telling thing that the book starts with Holt Fasner. _________________ Books read 2011: Ender's Game, the Fabric of the Cosmos, False Gods, Storm of Steel, Gardens of the Moon, Cambridge Encyclopedia of the Sun, Fall of Damnos, Regeneration, Redemption Ark, A Tale of Two Cities. |

Very much so. It sets the tone for the whole book.
A Dark and Hungry God Arises (I've never been convinced about the title by the way) is where all the pieces come together, but Chaos and Order is where the real shit hits the fan for Angus, Morn, Nick and others. You'll love it Stonemaybe. _________________ You do not hear, and so you cannot be redeemed.

Chaos and Order is outstanding. It might be my second favourite. |
