(Continued from Maddocs post)

"Hey man, yeah by some mere miracle. Hey, you free later?" The bike vibrated in idle between James legs, having pulled over to answer the mad vampire call. It had taken James a moment to recognise the voice on the phone when had answered.

"Free? Nothings free Jimmy-jam." The thin metallic voice said over the phone. "But I am always available. Your place or mine?"

James grinned "Ha! How about The Layson street Review Club. You heard of it?"

"Layson Street Review. 'Adult Entertainment & Best Drinks in town!'" said Maddoc, reciting the address exactly as it is written on the card from the dead man's wallet. "I shop there often."

"Sounds like you know where this is going. Well, my round then?"

There is a moments pause from the other end of the phone. "This game is dangerous Jimmy, but I'll play. See you soon." The line goes dead as Maddoc hung up.

Throwing his bike back into life James mind raced. So finally he would get to spend time with another kindred. Finally someone could tell him a little about this world he had no experience in.

Sure, investigating the thing from the opera house was probably a stupid idea, but it was a start. The more he learnt about this underworld he lived in, the closer Jimmy would get to throwing the prince off his back. And being free again.

Cold night air rushing through his long hair, Jimmy Randel speed through the night.

Maddoc winds his way home, to the Slums. Yesterday's paper blown down the street has more purpose to it, yet he finds shelter before the dawn rises. Again.

Flat on his back, his ruined clothes adding to stained mattress, Maddoc stares at the ceiling of the windowless room, his eyes twitching as if in REM sleep. A pair of rats nervously poke through the room, stopping every few steps to scent the air and look at Maddoc. Is he awake, or asleep? The rats don't seem to know, but they move cautiously deeper into the room anyway, driven by hunger.

In a flash, Maddoc's arm shoots out and he grabs one of the rats, crushing it meatily in one hand and flinging it against the wall. The other rat flees, and Maddoc lies back, closing his eyes, licking at his fist like it was an ice cream cone.

The rat's warm, weak blood flows into Maddoc's body and seeps into his dead veins and arteries. It is no sustenance, so he has to drain it dry to drink as much blood as supping on a mortal for half a minute. But it is enough.

Outside, the slums quietens as its thousands upon thousands of empty or forgotten residents succumb to sleep or death. A shot rings out into the night, but no one seems to care for no siren stridently breaks the stillness of the night. Yet, a baby cries, newly born; another addition to the downtrodden and broken, and no doubt would be dead within a week. Maddoc had seen the lifeless bodies of infants in trashcans or the heaps of rubbish.

The following night, Maddoc wakes.
-1 Vitae
There’s no sleepy-yawn , no blurry squint-eyed glare. One moment he is unconscious; the next he’s awake. He reaches immediately for the small glass pipe beside the mattress, only to find it cracked and empty. A wince of pain crosses his face...
Wait, is that real pain? No, without his morning hit, he'd be twitching. And as much pain as he appears to be in, there’s something that just doesn’t look right, doesn’t smell right.
His performance is getting better, though.

As it happens, Maddoc smells unbelievably, and his clothes are filthy. Bright flashes of purple are incongruously visible whenever he raises his arms, but otherwise his finery is unrecognizable. He staggers out of the tenements, scratching at his elbow with one hand. The other hand is wrapped tight around the map Montefiore gave him.

Taking a last look at the map, he heads North on foot, towards the City.

Maddoc leaves the slums, the poor people and the destitute paying no more attention to him than the grey, barren houses around them. A woman stumbles from her shack, bruised and weeping. A man injects heroin into his arm as he lies back on a broken couch in front of another. In the distance, a gunshot breaks the night, and a woman howls.

The night is warm and inviting as Maddoc pushes his way north. He seems to ignore the people he passes, and they happily reciprocate.

It is not long before he nears his destination; the point marked on Montefiore's scroll that should indicate the presence of a node, nestled incongruously in the downtown suburbs just north of the Slums.

Maddoc slows, obviously taking more notice of his surroundings. He scans the street ahead, ragged fingernails scratching at his cheek as if nervous.

Maddoc approaches a school - now deserted and lifeless - the playgrounds and asphalt yards littered with trash and graffiti. The clouds loom above the neighbourhood, heavy and dark, pregnant with rain and thunder. Out of the corner of his eye, the Malkovian sees a purple flash of light, and his skin is touched by the feeling of something electrical. The scent of ozone and blood drifts through the air . . . but no accompanying thunder.
