Am I the only one who thinks it's odd that we have this whole roleplaying section on a Thomas Covenant forum and there isn't a single Thomas Covenant roleplaying thread in it all?

As soon as I tried to have one of my characters build stone ships ("Drommonds") as per one of SRD's books, Odin ended the game.

I think we're all afraid to cite anything else Donaldson, for fear that it'll end the other games.

(Maybe that's how Mox can end the world in P3?)

But I only come here for the games, I haven't read anything the man has written.

Eh. Not really. For any other author, maybe, but... From a GM perspective, I'd be uncomfortable messing with canon, but mostly, part of what makes Donaldson great, or at least unique, is that he doesn't really have a useable system. You couldn't roll a haruchai, because you'd instantly be a bad ass. Same for Forestal, Elohim, Giant, etc. You could maybe be a Lord, but then, only a new lord. And then, what can you really do (when 'magic missile' pretty much beats anything any lord short of Mhoram achieves)? Other than that, you have stonedowner or woodhelvin. Maybe Raman. Great characters, but boring to play.

Donaldson's characters are far from static, but they don't level. They do things organically, in the moment. As for loot, you'd get what, clingor? Graveling? Nah, pretty soon everyone's running around with a jug of diamondraught, a pot of hurtloam, and a lomiallor rod.

Now, you could say the same thing about Tolkien and point to how D&D came about, but then, if you did that with the Land... well, it wouldn't be all that different than D&D. Or you start messing with canon.

A Watcher from long ago, Sevothtarte, started a Covenantesque game. But he dropped out of sight before giving us results for Turn 1. Laughing

Or maybe SRD just isn't that good of an author? GT is an entity unto itself, with people who don't leave this forum to go anywhere else on the site.

I'm not a fan of SRD, but I am a fan of kevinswatch. He made this site, and he keeps it going for us. That's what's important.

Hahaha, that's cool. Of course, you should probably read some SRD anyway, just so you know why we're actually all here. For you...I recommend starting with the Gap series. Wink

AH! I knew Coruption had a hand in this!

Well. That truely sucks. A friend of mine and I want to see if we can come up with our own "rules" for playing in the land. A thought struck me when Syl said "orgainic". Perhaps we might use a White Wolf type system. The "leveling" for White Wolf games is rather organic and makes me think of how things would work in real life. You know, focusing your learning on a specific part. Only thing is, every power hungry player who wants the most powerful character, would want things like the White Gold or the Staff of Law. Or even the krill. And the only way I would give my characters something like that was if they earned it. Even then, I would likely never give anyone the White Gold. Cause, really, it has no true definition. It can do practically anything. It would be the Land's version of a ring of wishes. Only there is no limit to the wishes.

Mayhap our idea will work. Mayhap it won't.

well even if your players had the white gol dthere is no guarantee they could make it work. any of the magic actually. they could be lugging around a ring that everyone wants to kill them for but is useless otherwise.

Hah. I have two players in my Vienna thread doing that right now. Started out with innert instances of some ancient bad-assed magic weapons. Don't work. Can't be fixed. But the bad guys don't know that.

Good times.

waaaaaaay back in d&d days i was a dm. (some 25 yrs ago) had a character who had a whole set of ten magic rings. (based on the mandarin's rings in iron man)

no one knew they were magic. the party kept finding ways to find out, never did. they all died with more power than anyone in their universe - useless to them.

someone should rob their corpses. Smile

Aren't you in Balance of Power? That's all land-based conquest. (Conquest of land, anyway... I guess you can take air or sea as entry vectors to the land.)

Thanks for the support, balon. All of you, thanks. The support means a lot. Maybe in a few months, or a year, I'll have Version 1.0 ready and all of you here at Kevin's Watch can play test it for me.
