Bravo! Encore! This is Revelstone in the Second Chronicles up, down,
and sideways.

John Gorka's "Night Is A Woman Who Embraces Me" is usually playing in my head as I read the part of Gilden-Fire where Korik is standing watch through a long, cold night remembering his wife. Though there's no evidence that Gorka knows the works of SRD, the lyric cries out to be reimagined as a translation of a traditional Haruchai song.

I'm fairly new to the Chronicles (I read the six books this spring). I'm re-reading LFB, and happened to pop in a CD I haven't really listened to in years - it was one of my favorites - Sarah McLaughlin's Surfacing. I happened upon the song "Do What You Have To Do" and it seemed like it would fit the end of the second chronicles/beginning of third chronicles, sung from Linden's pov. Let me know what you think:

What ravages of spirit
conjured this temptuous rage
created you a monster
broken by the rules of love
and fate has lead you through it
you do what you have to do
and fate has led you through it
you do what you have to do ...

and I have the sense to recognize that
I don't know how to let you go
every moment marked
with apparitions of your soul
I'm ever swiftly moving
trying to escape this desire
the yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
the yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do

but I have the sense to recognize
that I don't know how
to let you go
I don't know how
to let you go
a glowing ember
burning hot
burning slow
deep within I'm shaken by the violence
of existing for only you
I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do

and I have sense to recognize but
I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go

Stellar 1st post MacNik6-I heard that song on the radio the other day and thought it should be on the Chronicles soundtrack-that deserves at least 10,000 WGDs!!! Welcome! Cool

Ok, I could certainly go with Symphony X's " Divine Wings of Tragedy" - a 24 minute opus that has the fastest/cleanest guitarist in the world - Michael Romeo, but I'm sorry to say that a movie soundtrack for TC would have to be classical in nature.

As well, SRD has written lyrics throughout the series, so you have a basis for the proper settings and tempo. I'm also betting he has much more available that he didn't use. So:

Aaron Copeland's "Appalachian Spring" for the opening - with just the violins - prior to the Gorilla Forte sections - that lead to the main chorus with strains of lyrics of The Land in the background, then coming to the front as the Land is shown.

From there:

Gustav Holst's "The Planets : Mars, The Bringer of War" as Foul is
introduced.

Antonin Dvorak's " Symphony #9 : From a New World" for the lengthier segments.

Beethoven's " King Stephen Symphony" as they make their way to Revelstone.

Softer sections:

Rossini's " String Sonata in C minor"
Vivaldi's " The Rites of Spring"
Beethoven's "String Trio in G Major from Opus #9"
Dvorak's "Americam Finale"

Wagner's "Ride of the Valyrie" later when Lena gets to ride the Ranyhyn.

For some of the battles, compositions like:

Tchaikovsky's "Marche Slave" and " Capriccio Italian"
" Russian Christmas Music - Encore and Serenade"
Mozart's "Romainian Folk Dance", "25th Symphony" and "23rd Symphony"

and even Adamere Rospigii's " The Pines of Rome" for the forest scenes.

Just a thought,

I song by a band that I otherwise can't stand reminds me of TCTC quite a bit (and the Gap series too, really...) "The Reason" seems to talk about the redemptive power of guilt, which is something of a major theme in the books...meh, rather than describe it I think I'll just paste the lyrics here:

Quote:
I'm not a perfect person
There's many things I wish I didn't do
But I continue learning
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I found a reason for me
To change who I use to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you

I'm sorry that I hurt you
It's something I must live with everyday
And all the pain I put you through
I wish that I could take it the way
And be the one who catches all your tears
That's why I need you to hear

I found a reason for me
To change who I use to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you
And the reason is you
And the reason is you
And the reason is you

I'm not a perfect person
I never meant to do those things to you
And so I have to say before I go
That I just want you to know

I found a reason for me
To change who I use to be
A reason to start over new
And the reason is you
I found a reason to show
A side of me you didn't know
A reason for all that I do
And the reason is you

Linkin Park actually have quite a few songs suitable to Thomas Covenant. Shocked

I don't actually like them anymore. But I'm just making a point. Razz

Here's an example:

Quote:
Crawling in my skin, these wounds they will not heal, fear is how I fall. Confusing what is real

Quote:
I've
become so numb
I can't feel you there
become so tired
so much more aware
I'm becoming this
all I want to do
is be more like me
and be less like you

Quote:
(No)
I wont let you control my fate While I'm holding the weight of the world on my conscience
(No)
I wont just sit here and wait while you weighin your options
Your makin a fool of me
(No)
You didn't dare to try and say you don't care
And solemnly swear not to follow me there
(No)
It aint like me to beg on my knees
Or, please oh baby please
That's not how I'm doin things
(No)
No I'm not upset, no I'm not angry
I know love is love and love sometimes, it doesn't pay me
(No)
I'm never without you, I'll always be with you
You'll never forget me, I'm keeping you with me
(No)
I wont let you take me to the end of my row
Or keep burning and torching my soul
(No)
No I'm not your puppet
And no, no, no, I wont let you go

Quote:

It's true the way I feel
Was promised by your face
The sound of your voice
Painted on my memories
Even if you're not with me
I'm with you

Hey! It's Lord Foul's themesong! Cool

Quote:
Disturbed - Prayer

Another dream that will never come true
Just to compliment your sorrow
Another life that I've taken from you
A gift to add on to your pain and suffering
Another truth you can never believe
Has crippled you completely
All the cries you're beginning to hear
Trapped in your mind, and the sound is deafening

Let me enlighten you
This is the way I pray

Heaven just isn't hot enough,
Burn me alive, inside
Living my life's not hard enough
Take everything away

Another nightmare about to come true
Will manifest tomorrow
Another love that I've taken from you
Lost in time, on the edge of suffering
Another taste of the evil I breed
Will level you completely
Bring to life everything that you fear
Live in the dark, and the world is threatening

Let me enlighten you
This is the way I pray

Heaven just isn't hot enough,
Burn me alive, inside
Living my life's not hard enough
Take everything away

Return to me, return to me, return to me, turn to me, leave me no one
Turn to me, return to me, return to me, turn to me, cast aside
Return to me, return to me, return to me, turn to me, leave me no one
Turn to me, return to me, return to me, turn to me, you've made me turn away

Living just isn't hard enough
Burn me alive, inside
Living my life's not hard enough,
They take everything from you

Living just isn't hard enough
Burn me alive, inside
Living my life's not hard enough,
They take everything from you

I made myself a The Land playlist a while ago. It's far from complete. And it's mostly comprised of black metal, so I doubt it'd go down too well with a film audience. Plus some of the songs were kind of square pegs in round holes. I was just working with the music I had. Although I had some Ensiferum in there, and I saw someone mention that earlier.

But there's some songs in there which, I think, are perfect for it. Sometimes the lyrics don't fit, but... to be fair, half the time you can't understand the vocals in these songs.

For instance.
Covenant waking up on Kevin's Watch at the start of LFB:
Catharsis - A Trip Into Elysium.
This one's instrumental, it's epic, it's beautiful... and it starts off as just a keyboard thing, and gradually opens up into a glorious majestic tune.

Hile Troy seeing Fleshharrower's army for the first time in TIW:
Samael - The Cross.
Unfortunately the lyrics, although quite appropriate in some ways, contain various references that just don't work:
"North, south, east and west, the Cross is sent over the lands
Keep draining what was and will be; in our time, in our life
Pilot soul takes you on the ride, no rise, no fall for Humankind"
Plus more about Christianity. But the music has this brilliant slow, marching, crushing atmosphere.

And Lord Foul's theme, I think, could be taken from - if not the entire song - Dissection's The Somberlain. It's just pure evil.

Of course, a film version would never have songs like that in it.
But more realistically, I'd like to see Nobuo Uematsu compose the music. He did the soundtracks for all the Final Fantasy games, and he's frankly amazing. My playlist had several of his battle themes in it. Especially during the siege at Revelstone in The Power That Preserves. And anyone who's heard Aerith's Theme from Final Fantasy VII will know that he can write utterly heart-rendingly beautiful pieces too.

I personally liked what Manson did with Resident Evil. I think it would be great if we could get something similar going for TCTC it would sound great. Just throw a couple other "strange" artists into the mix and give them creative freedom and it would have a great other-worldly sound to it.

No music with lyrics during the movie! Over the end credits I could handle.

I'd love for Howard Shore to score this!

You know who would be great? It just hit me the other day - Godspeed You Black Emperor. It's almost all instrumental, but it's incredibly... epic. Their shortest songs are about 10 minutes long, and they just build up, and up, and up, and... yeah.

And in the hypothetical film scenario, I think it could also help to give it that unique feel that's needed to keep it well apart from the LOTR trilogy, that a classically scored soundtrack wouldn't do.

I'm not sure what the forum's rules about uploading music are, so I won't post a track here, but if you can find them, listen especially to "Storm" and "East Hastings" (the latter really begins a couple of minutes in, after the strange bagpipe bit at the start. It was also featured in 28 Days Later, when Jim comes out onto the streets of London for the first time).

Excuse me, but music (with lyrics) by a band would completely ruin a Covenant movie. I mean, here we are in this magical fantasy world full of profound things, and suddenly we hear a pop song (from Earth)? Just because a song is good doesn't mean it should be put into a movie.
Some people wanted Led Zeppelin music in the LOTR movie. Can you imagine what it would have been like? It would have completely destroyed the atmosphere!

Just my 2 silver pieces.

I have to agree completely with Jonas.
I notice that everyone is talking about songs, but songs, while appropriate here and there, won't carry an epic fantasy series. The symphonic genre, with all of its themes and compositions, stands a much better chance of doing so.
The problem with pop music is that what is pop is by definition temporary.

A good case in point is the recent 'Narnia' soundtrack. With several pop songs thrown in with the score the album received general boos - see Amazon.com if you don't believe it. A clear majority of soundtracks that continue to sell more than a year after release are symphonic.

That aside, everyone's taste is different, and while all of us can enjoy scenes with symphonic music, many do not necessarily like pop, 'new age' (how long will that be 'new'?) or rap, hip-hop, or whatever.

You don't want the music in a scene to be embarassing 10 years on when tastes have changed...
