Australian James Magnussen misses out on a gold medal in the 100m freestyle by one one-hundredth of a second to American Nathan Adrian! Lordy, talk about getting the heart pumping!

Ooo!
...need to keep quiet about the "local athlete" scoring gold, since we won't see coverage for a good four to six hours yet.

Wiggins was impressive! That we saw already.

Hadn't heard about rowing. Congrats to the Brits! So glad the gold is starting to roll in for the host country.

I just wish the British mens gymnastics team was able to keep the silver. I disagree with the appeal ruling which changed the standings...

Yes, I heard about that. Still, first medal for the team since 1912! And the equestrian team got silver. Very Happy

Being a former swimmer in the most serious sense makes me pay attention to swimming, and so I was watching and that was a great damn race.

[and I'm pissed as hell at all the people...especially the one damn american ass who actually SHOULD know about swimming accusing the chinese girl...I mean, they're calling shit "IMPOSSIBLE," and "NEVER happened before"...all of which is bullshit. It is UNLIKELY, SURPRISING, and EXCITING!. I will be disappointed if they turn out right...but as things are, she has gone through MULTIPLE tests already and been clean.]

[and I'm pissed at all the "Phelps is a slacker" shit...like the other swimmer who said "if he worked as hard as I do, he'd be REALLY great." as if he wasn't already and, SO fucking stupid, as if ANYONE who eats 12,000 calories a DAY [that's almost a week per day for peeps who ignore diet/fitness numbers] and is STILL sporting a serious six-pack, could possibly be lazy.]

But, peter...I think it would be cool as hell if there were a non-"my country won, so we're great, which means I'M great, even though I'm a worthless lump" version. I don't know how it could happen, though.

Che? You don't get it live?

Vraith, it's interesting that the Aussie swimmers are also copping unreasonable crap from the Oz media - out of condition, under performing etc. And the endless insinuations regarding the Chinese girl, it's very disappointing.

I watched the rowing that Britain won - another great race. Actually, the rowing is awesome to watch. They just give every ounce of energy they have.

Another event I didn't think I'd enjoy is the weightlifting. I've only seen the women's events so far, but it has been exciting!

Che? You don't get it live?

Sadly, no. Televised coverage here in the US is all via the networks of NBC / Universal. Major events are all shown on tape-delay during the 8 - midnight "primetime" window to maximize viewership and advertising revenue. Events are intermixed and cut to pieces to draw out the suspense; for example, the gymnastics is shown a few minutes at a time throughout the evening to tease the viewer and make sure one does not leave and potentially miss something (especially not those commercials that are the driving force of each broadcast.)

Here in the upper-left corner, during prior Olympics we were able to ditch NBC and pull in CBC's excellent coverage from their Vancouver station...but that has not worked this year. Sad

We can stream live events on the computer, but one must be a subscriber of a cable or satellite provider to do so. There apparently is no free live streaming for those in the US.

Today, apart from being instructed by a 7 year old on how to use the various zappers for the 2 TVs, I have watched shooting (GB Gold), canoeing (GB Gold and silver), cycling (GB Gold), tennis, hand ball, judo (GB silver), swimming, fencing and probably some other sports that I've forgotten. Thank goodness we are going out tomorrow. Laughing

Some events I get live as it happens from one of the Canadian stations right across the water...but AFAICT it is mostly random with some relation with whether a Canadian is in the running [or it's Missy Franklin, cuz her parents are and she's a star...I like her a lot]. So far saw assorted rowing, lots of Phelps and Lochte and pretty much all the Franklin swimming, women's Gym...and...blech...synchronized diving...live.

What a strange way to determine a tie-breaker in the Woman's gymnastics all-around.

I understand Aliya's (great name, btw) total points after her lowest score was dropped was higher than Ally's, but another way of looking at it was that Ally was penalized for having a better lowest score...

ah well. a shame two bronze medals couldn't be awarded.

Apologies Menolly and SD for jumping the gun, and also for your crap coverage Big Grin There is a similar version in Oz too and it's unwatchable.

You will no doubt be aware that Phelps is up there with the greatest swimmers of all time! it must be all the more sweet considering the criticism in the lead up.

The US now have the highest gold tally of 42 (I think) just ahead of the Chinese. And the athletics is only just beginning!

Roger Goodell (the commish of the NFL) wants to introduce American Football to the Olympics.

this kind of gives lie to his utmost concern of player safety by adding even more games to the schedule.

and how many years til anyone even is competitive with an all-star nfl team?

assuming any nfl team is stupid enough to consent to their players being involved.

i guess you could use just retired players and guys who never really made it in the nfl. then are you really seeing the best and brightest players?

Roger Goodell has been smoking some funny smelling stuff lately, I see.

Yesterday was the first day I watched any length of NBC's prime time programing. Just irritating. Up till now it appeared to be heavy on gymnastics and swimming coverage, which don't much interest me. Now though that track events are starting I can't really avoid having to tune in.

On the positive, they showed, at least the last two, soccer matches live on MSNBC in the afternoon. Both Brazil - Honduras and GB - S. Korea were good matches to watch, though a thunderstorm forced me to shut down before the shootout in the second.

The app that NBC has for the iPad is much better. I've been using the app early in the morning. The action is live, or closer to live. Many of the sports they just show the action without commentary. This morning, I'm splitting time between the women's marathon and sailing finals.

Oh, yes, and with the silver in the mixed doubles.

Don't know whether you saw his climb up to the box to hug his parents etc., and him turning back to hug that little boy - I was weeping like mad by then. Very Happy
