I got this in an e-mail today. I do not know why it was sent to me, but I presume it was spammed to many people.

Quote:
Hello Webmaster / Site Operator!

This is our first attempt to reach out to you in regards to this issue.

My name is Timmy and I am reaching out to you as a representative from www.newkadia.com. We are all at the mercy of Google, unfortunately. As Google updates their algorithm we are forced to adapt and adhere to their quality guidelines. We understand the stress this puts on webmasters, and we apologize for that inconvenience, but for our own best interest we cannot ignore Google.

We have recently completed a full backlink profile audit on our site’s and have found links that were once valuable, may now have a negative effect on our internet presence. We found the following backlinks from your site:

http://kevinswatch.ihugny.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=921516

Please remove the above links as well as all other links to www.newkadia.com

These links were created by a former SEO company with whom we no longer have a relationship with. We were not aware of this link building scheme and apologize for their actions.

We want to highlight the fact that this is not only an attempt to improve our website, but this will have a positive effect on your site as well.

We also do not participate in paying to have links removed, as advised from Google’s webspam team.

Again, we are deeply sorry for this inconvenience. Please let us know if you are willing to help us help you and remove the links listed above.

We greatly appreciate your time and attention to this matter. Thank you very much!

Best Regards,
Timmy

It doesn't sniff like some sort of scam. And there is such a link on that page (something about "Shaman's Tears".) And Google is a bit awkward about how it sorts out real web commerce sites from scams designed to boost search results. On the other hand, I don't think Fist and Faith was participating in a link building scheme.

... or was he? Twisted Evil

Seems like a pretty badly designed auto-mailer that's almost as bad as the SEO service they used in the first place. Presumably it's misidentifying pretty much any link as one generated by the SEO's spambots, and just lifting whatever email address it can find on the site to send the message. Has to be automated, since it'd be difficult for a human to fail so badly at finding the correct address as to lift yours.

Google does automatically downrank sites whose links appear to be generated by spam services that were originally intended to boost rankings.

Oddly, I didn't post anywhere in that thread. You probably have the right of it, except I would expect you and Fist - who did post on that page - to get mail, too. It would be odd if I got singled out somehow. (Am I registered as the owner?!)

The only really weird thing is that you got it WF.

I know exactly what it is, and Murrin is exactly right. It's a link removal request, and quite possibly automated.

The site is trying to clean up it's back link profile, and is just treating any unrecognised link as something to remove. Once they've removed (or provably tried to remove) "spammy" links, they'll disavow any that are left, and ask Google to reconsider their penalty.

The fact that the link technically uses "keyword rich" anchor text might have something to do with it, although anybody with half a brain can recognise it's actually a good link. But these penalties have people running about like chickens without heads. Very Happy

One possibility occurs to me WF...did you receive it to the address you're registered here with? It is Kevin's Watch after all... Wink

If you're willing to, reply to them and ask them to contact a site admin, and give them my avatar.kw address.

I'll ask them how they got yours.

I'd just ignore them. Perhaps they pulled your e-mail from your profile, just selecting someone at random.

Yeah, that address. But I can't see anyone puzzling that out.

They could have searched the member list for somebody whose email contained that word. Very Happy

I'm going to take the link out anyway. Do me a favour and send me the reply address of that mail so I can notify them.

Otherwise they'll include the forum in their disavow request (a request to Google to ignore links from specific domains).

Although officially having your domain disavowed by somebody does not affect that domain, there has been speculation in the industry that that may change at some point.

Their loss if they can't spot a valuable link when they see one. (See headless chickens above. Very Happy )

The mail was from newkadia@linkremoval.company. Ask for "Timmy".

Thanks WF.

Shouldn't be an issue, but better safe than sorry. Wink
