Pretty straight forward question, as follows:

You're in a boat on an ocean and you see your family pet whom you grew up with all your life on one side, and a total stranger on the other both drowning, you only have time to save one, whom do you pick?

Question is, which life is of value the most, the human, or the pet. Total stranger, or life long best friend? One is an animal, the other is a human being one of your own kind and humanity? Which is paramount? Hope this stirs up some decent talk. Cheers.

Ah. The old Kobayashi Maru test. I think I'll reprogram the simulation so it is possible to save them both. Very Happy

I honestly would have to be put in that terrible situation to know how I'd react. Either way you'd lose.

Depends.

Altruistically, I save the Human (even Darth)

Wink

However, if it seemed that being stranded for a while was going to be the case, I might opt to save the pet, as I would have an easier time eating him if need be, rather than a CPA from suburban Philly. Also, the divying of resources would be easier.

It depends; is the human a republican or a democrat? Wink

As Tom said, it's very difficult to give an accurate answer without having been in that position, but I think I'd go for the human. I'm not that big on pets, heh. And you don't get much conversation from a dog.

The person, easily. Pets die all the time. Besides, at the funeral (or media coverage, whatever), could you face the dead guy's family and tell them you just had to save Fluffy instead?

I imagine it must feel very dizzying and confusing to be in a situation where you hold the power of life and death in your hands. I've never had a long-time family pet, so I don't know how strong my emotional bond would be with said animal. But I don't think I would want to live with the guilt of not having tried to save a fellow human being, even if it was a total stranger.

LOL Fist! Thinking outside the box, eh? You and TOM C should work on this problem. Smile

Truthfully, I don't know what I'd do. I think that people usually act on what they feel, not what they think. With only a split-second to act, literally no time to consider, I think my choice would be akin to a reflex. But I can't say which way it would go.

I'd pick the person, even if you did act on feeling alone the site of a human drowning would override all feeling I had for the pet... I think. Or maybe that's just my lifegaurd's instinct, ha. Rolling Eyes

I'd save the human. My pet is a turtle, so I doubt it's in any danger of drowning.

A pet's a pet. In theory I'd save the person. In truth I'd probably panic and do nothing.

HAH! Murrin you just described how 75% of us would probably react. Well done!

Actually I was describing how I react to almost any decision I ever have to make. Maybe not panicking, but certainly worrying needlessly and putting off doing anything.
