A new topic for discussion of the next Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen, to avoid spoilers in the Erikson thread.

**Warning, minor promotional spoilers ahead**

The following blurb for the Bonehunters was posted on the Malazan Empire boards today:
Quote:
From the Inside Flap
The sixth volume in Steven Erikson's truly epic fantasy sequence, The Malazan Book of the Fallen.

There’s nothing like sweeping up tag-ends to change the world. The Seven Cities Rebellion has been crushed. Sha’ik slain by Tavore, the Malazan forces pacifying city after city on the troubled subcontinent, and one last rebel army, under the reluctant, embittered command of Leoman of the Flails, is pursued to the ancient and infamous city of Y’Ghatan by Tavore and the Fourteenth Army. Dogged by self-doubt and ill omens, the 14th must lay siege to the city, and Adjunct Tavore must seek to outwit Leoman of the Flails, the deadliest foe she has ever faced.

Into this fraught scenario come both new and familiar characters. Among the latter, Heboric Ghost Hands, journeying to redress an old wrong. Apsalar, haunted by possession and now the principal agent of Cotillion, Patron of Assassins, marking a trail with blood and dripping daggers. Cutter, the killer who had once been a thief in Darujhistan, fleeing a shattered heart. Karsa Orlong, a warrior hunting his destiny. And two old friends, traveling companions, Mappo and Icarium, wandering once more the ravaged wastelands, Icarium seeking the ancient truths of his own life, Mappo seeking to keep those truths from him, at all costs.

All, searching for such fates as they might fashion with their own hands, guided by their own will. If only the gods would leave them alone. Alas, the gods are disinclined to be kind, now that knives have been unsheathed, and there shall be war, war in the heavens.

And here is the link to Deep Magic magasine, which you can download to see a recent interview in which he names some characters which will appear in Bonehunters (see the 'favourite characters' question): http://www.deep-magic.net/Issues/September2004/index.shtml#

I'm impressed with the writer of that blurb, and it sounds like I may have to make time to read that series.

The Prologue of The Bonehunters is now available in the mass market paperback Midnight Tides. There's been talk of an electronic version possibly making it onto www.malazanempire.com

Edit: For now, here's the "Furtively Read In A Bookshop summarised version".

Alright, that's it. I'm starting a petition to have the U.S. admit to the folly of the whole Declaration of Independance thing and rejoin the U.K. SO THAT WE CAN GET THE REST OF THE SERIES OVER HERE.

The cover.

Interesting.
(Deadhouse Gates Spoiler)
Spoiler:
People have mentioned that it looks a lot like Kalam fighting the Claw in Malaz, but that was three books ago, so it must be something different.

Patch was finally granted permission by the publishers to post the Bonehunters prologue on the Malazan boards. If you want to read it, go here:
http://malazan.com/eve/ubb.x/a/tpc/f/930106197/m/352106879

Some very interesting stuff there, and only 11 months to go before we find out where it's heading, heh.

i'm only about 250 pages in but i've already had some jaw-dropping moments and a couple of good laughs!!! also...i'm following this one better...either Erikson is getting the hang of these quick scene changes and they are flowing better or else i'm just getting used to reading Erikson.

This book is great. I especially love how Erikson ties a number of story threads from earlier books together and makes me go 'oh shiiiiiit' in anticipation of what's coming. Also, we now have a SERIOUSLY unresolved 'problem' with Kalam. What the hell? Shocked

I can't wait for the major showdown between Spoiler:
Karsa Orlong
and Spoiler:
Icarium
, although I suspect they'll team up in the end.

Erikson does seem to follow quite a fixed pattern to build up his books, as in: mysterious prologue --> several plot lines --> prologue explained --> plot converges to one major event --> setting up of next book.

Spoiler:
As is Quick Ben, and who knows what will happen to Kalam.

I loved Paran versus Poliel and Fiddler's game using the Deck of Dragons, and the whole end of the book with the running battle going on in Malaz City rocked. Alos very glad that Tavore survived, but poor T'amber. Sad

So... I'm only about 300 pages in and I just got done screaming (practically) to Erikson that if he killed Fiddler I'd rip his head off.

Maybe I need to stop reading these books?

Also, the 14th's journey through the Y Ghatan's ruins makes me think that they're becoming new Bridgeburners or something... version 2.0, Now with more rat power!

Am I on to anything?

Good lord!!! I thought everybody else stopped posting in here!!!

Laughing

I risked reading your post, hoping I wouldn't see a big spoiler before I was able to close my eyes. Heh. I'm on page 92, in the oversized paperback I have that has 794 pages. (The regular paperback that comes out in a few days has 1232 pages!! Shocked Laughing) But I need to go slow, because I'm supposed to be reading this with Jenn. I called her to ask why she hadn't started, not realizing CovJr was still visiting.

I'm on ~p. 80 in the hardback (so glad I got the hardback, the book is much easier to look at w/o the cover). It starts on p 20 or so, so I've only read maybe 60 pages. It's been 7 or 8 months since I read HoC, and let me say, I forgot a helluva lot.
