As long time Star Wars fan who saw A New Hope come out in the theater originally, and was called a Star Wars Freak throughout grade school, I'm afraid (hell, more than afraid....I'm certain) it is going to go out on a sour note. Yes, there will be other Star Wars movie fluttering around after, but wrapping up the Skywalker saga with this level of botchery, I expect another in a line of disappointing Star Wars movies. I try not to get my hopes up, and the one I liked the most of the non-Lucas movies was the one I had no excitement for (Solo). Granted, Lucas as much as said I wasn't the target audience since I saw Empire Strikes Back, and that truly was the last Star Wars movie that I adored.
But really? The Emperor in this new movie? Is that true? I always found him an annoying character, although there was some interesting things done with him in the prequels, particularly the convincing argument for Anakin to become Vader in the book form of Revenge Of The Sith.
So the first Lucas-less Star Wars film was criticized for being too similar to A New Hope. Then the second movie was criticized for being too different. So with Palpy returning to the saga, are we going back to too similar again? I guess as much as I can hope for is that they find a middle ground.
It's not like they don't have great Star Wars writers around Disney these days. The dude that did Rebels did some of the best Star Wars moments of the past twenty years, if not of all time. I even like the way Rebellion is going, but I hear it will only have two seasons.
Anybody have an opinion on this? _________________

I am not looking forward to them with a high amount of excitement or anticipation but we will definitely see them. The original trilogy was great--not truly unique since the story was not original, but the setting and the effects were groundbreaking. The prequel trilogy could have been better, but Lucas was trying too hard and most of the principal actors where phoning it in. Ewan McGregor was not too bad and Temuera Morrison was underused. The latest trilogy was Disney trying to hard to erase all trace of Lucas and, truthfully, piss off a lot of long-time fans--too much of that "bingo card diversity" we mentioned in a different thread. Also, it is very easy to make the logical case that Rey is a Mary Sue--I think she is how that producer (I forget her name) saw herself as a Jedi when she was growing up.
The magic is gone but they are still good enough to watch so we will continue watching. These movies will not inspire people like the original ones did, though. That is a shame.

Until The Phantom Menace i didnt think it was possible to be disappointed with a Star Wars film but i was educated quickly and have lowered my expectations ever since. With the Force Awakens I felt that a Star Wars film could be made that at least met my lowered standards and allowed me to have fun with it again. Then the Last Jedi showed me that the bar just wasn't nearly low enough.
If Episode 9 manages to entertain me near the level of Episode 7 or even 6 I will call that a victory and move on. _________________

I dont have your exacting standards and yet I totally acknowledge a steady decline imv since the prequels .. but I now accept them for what they are ... a bit of fun and nonsense.
I think its healthier to go in with lowered expectations as it assists to great degree with disappointment 🤷♀️ _________________ health and healing

Eh, I didn't hate the prequels as much as some did. I did hate TFA, but TLJ wasn't as bad for me.
My expectations are low anyway, so will not worry too much about it sucking. I expect it to.

Just saw the latest trailer.....
Spoiler: So Rey is a Sith now. |
I'm interested in the same way that I slow down to look at a car accident.
Enough with the Skywalker thing already.[/spoiler] _________________ https://thoolah.blogspot.com/

When I first saw the trailer, I thought it was Keri Russell under the hood. Are we entirely sure it isn't? _________________

I saw the original theatrical run of Star Wars, was obsessed with the 1st trilogy for years and had a million plastic Star Wars figures as a kid.
But this stuff has become little more than a product to me over time; much like the MCU it all becomes very production-line, very fast-food; it feels like the product of focus-groups and marketing analysts.
That original spark of creativity barely lasted to the Return of the Jedi, even as a kid I could sense the 'franchise' was starting to spin its wheels.
I won't see the new film, and I've only watched crappy pirated versions of the most recent films, none of which I found to be entertaining at all. I can't even remember Rogue One it was so bland.
I suspected I might enjoy Rian Johnson's somewhat subversive entry but it just didn't go anywhere near far enough in blowing things up, and the less said about JJ Abrams film the better, it was just pandering of the worst kind.
I find it sad and depressing that middle-aged men are still so in thrall of their own nostalgia 40+ years down the line, and that kids are basically indoctrinated into believing this stuff is important with the relentless marketing.
So no I am not dreading the new movie, I am just dreading the tide of advertising in the lead-up and then all the sooking and whinging on social media afterwards - the movie itself I just don't care about; whether it's the revelation of new Skywalkers or the Emperor is dusted off, it has all the thrill and creativity of one of those colour-by-numbers books.
What I really don't get are all the people - presumably grown-ass men - who bitch and moan about the newer movies and yet obsess over them - you don't have to invest your time and money into this stuff!

No, because
Spoiler: that isn't the real Rey, only a clone of Rey. That's okay, though, because the actual Rey is also a clone. |

I lost complete interest in the whole Star Wars thing before the prequels, and pretty much after seeing Return of the Jedi the first time. Every experience since has been the disappointment I felt after seeing ROTJ. So do these movies hold absolutely no charms whatsoever? No...there are still some cool things in them occasionally. Honestly, what brought me back into the fold was reading my son a book of Star Wars Rebels when he was pretty little, and the main character goes into a Jedi temple, and faces a test of sorts. I became intrigued because they were hitting on exactly what I always found the most interesting in Star Wars - the mysticism of the Force. When Lucas introduced Midichlorians, I figured I was done with the series. But I went through Rebels and caught up with Clone Wars, and as uneven as hell as that is, the good bits are the best things done in the name of Star Wars. Pity about the movies not being as good as an animated series, but I don't obsess about it. I have a friend who does, and we get into several nerd debates about it all, and it is fun, but mostly we see eye to eye on it.
So I guess my fanboi-ism, despite being a grown-ass man, is in check, and while the movies have great nuggets of stuff, like Yoda's appearance in the most recent film, it is fun to discuss and debate these movies hoping things would have gone better and how we'd improve them if we had our way, much in the same way others enjoy discussing politics. Despite what Lucas says, in that they are for kids, they have timeless themes, and lately they have aiming at grownups much more, while still be kid friendly.
I don't dress up and stand in line for days before a release, and neither do I sign online petitions to redo any of the movies. But I've devoted a fair amount of time discussing and dissecting the flicks into "what works" and "what doesn't." Someone gave me a lanyard at work with BB-8 that I think they got for free, and had lots of grown-ass people discuss the movies with me, and it is often a good talking point and builds a bond with the people I help.
Nah...what I hate is fucking Star Trek! _________________

The movies were nice and all, but where I really got into it was the expanded universe. (And yes, I loved the whole mysticism thing, but the midichlorians didn't completely destroy it for me.)
But as soon as the chucked the expanded universe out in favour of a Disney Lite version...well...that annoyed me.
