To be fair, he didn't say people should inject disinfectant, he just asked if it was something they could look into.

Agree that by virtue of his position he should be a lot more careful about what he says, but we already know that isn't going to happen. Very Happy

Only an idiot does something because the POTUS appears to suggest it. The people who die from drinking and/or injecting some sort of disinfectant deserve to go pick up their Darwin Award in person in whatever afterlife awaits them.

Apparently he has stopped taking it...presuming that he ever really was in the first place, which is questionable. We can neither prove nor disprove his claim that he was.

Yup .. 100 percent agree Hashi you are absolutely right.

Not sure why Trump seemed to promote hydroxycoroquine but I dont know why he says and does half the things he does.

Well, that certainly is one argument. Very Happy And to be honest, it's the one I tend to lean toward more strongly myself. Very Happy

That said, it could also be argued that somebody in his position has the responsibility to etc. etc. but that's a waste of breath as I suspect that the only meaning his position has to him is the power and prestige associated therewith, not the concomitant responsibilities...

Below is a false narrative. 99.999% of kids will be fine. This virus just doesn't seem to affect kids the same way it does adults.

With the schools locked down, accidents and deaths from car accidents are down significantly.

Those same deaths and accidents will go up significantly when kids go back to school, so Trump must be OK with deaths from traffic accidents.

You forget--deaths due to automobile accidents are acceptable deaths, as are deaths from drug overdoses, complications from cancer, heart disease, diabetes, pulmonary conditions, stroke, allergic reactions, and poisonous bites. Those are just the "business as usual" deaths which never even blip on our radar under normal circumstances. Corona deaths are special and magical--they must all be avoided at all cost and any number of deaths, no matter how small, is because Trump is just a demonic asshole who wants people to die.

People who want the lockdowns to continue want to keep battered women at home with their abusers and for abused children to stay locked indoors with the adults who are abusing them.

A few things - yes there are less cases of COVID19 in kids, but they do get COVID, and they can die and have died from COVID, and more importantly they can carry COVID and transfer it to others.

But there is now an understanding that kids can get a particular inflammatory illness from COVID.
Quote:
News has been spreading of a new inflammatory illness in children linked to COVID-19.

So far, the illness - dubbed PIMS-TS and described as similar to the rare Kawasaki disease - has been identified in more than 100 children in New York State, and linked to three deaths there.

Sure low statistical mortality rate but hey its early days.

Quote:
Paediatricians around the world are noticing that children - some infected with COVID-19, some who are not - are winding up in hospitals and intensive care units with "a range of unusual and varied symptoms", says Dr Angus Stock from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. "These include prolonged fever, abdominal pain, low oxygen levels (or shock), rashes and conjunctivitis," he says. "Closer clinical examination has also revealed that many of these children have developed inflammation within their hearts."

Those are truly exceptions. Each year, millions of children get sick with seasonal flu. Thousands of children are hospitalized, and some children die from flu. Reported death numbers have ranged from 37 in the 2011-2012 season to 358 during the H1N1 pandemic season.

25K ages 0-4 get hospitalized on average in the US from the flu.

So a few hundred having these odd symptoms that resemble Kawasaki disease, is not so alarming.

True but just as avoidable as any health condition can be ... so too is this.

Its about taking care of yourself and your loved ones.

And I just cant be as cavalier with the lives of my kids or my kids, kids.

Quote:
Trump says he wants to shut down Twitter, signs order to crack down on social media

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he would shut down Twitter if his lawyers could find a way to do it.

"I think we shut it down, as far as I'm concerned, but I'd have to go through a legal process," the president told reporters. "If it were able to be legally shut down, I would do it."

Trump's comments came shortly after he signed an executive order seeking to crack down on Twitter and other social-media companies over allegations of bias and censorship targeting conservatives.

Trump signed the order two days after Twitter added fact-checking links - the first of their kind - to two of his tweets pushing false claims about voting by mail...

...Despite the president's threats, First Amendment experts say he does not have the power to regulate or shut down social-media companies because he disagrees with them.

Tech policy experts echoed that assessment, telling Business Insider that parts of the executive order are not legal at all, while other sections would require agencies to throw out years of judicial precedent.

Has there ever been a president who has so personalised the office, and made it about themselves, as Trump has?

So have your kids and your kids kids have always practiced social distancing and worn masks during the flu season? You know, since the flu is shown to be more deadly to kids than Covid. I suspect not. If not, then why were you so cavalier with their lives every flu season?

Im not trying to be snarky just to point out the inconsistency in your statements.

That is how Democrats have been thinking about Republicans for years--remember Kathy Griffin and the disembodied Trump head?

I am still no great fan of Trump but the way he makes his political opponents froth at the mouth always makes me feel like a cat that just ate a hamster--all warm and fuzzy inside.

The Trump and Barr un-reality Twitter show [In-Depth, Opinion]

Quote:

President Donald Trump speaks to members of the press prior to signing an Executive Order on Preventing Online Censorship May 28 in the Oval Office of the White House. (White House photo/Shealah Craighead)

Today, I am going to do something I never, ever thought I would do: Rise to the defense of Twitter. Call me guilty of moral relativism, but I find myself inclined to support almost any person or thing that President Donald Trump attacks, even if I have long harbored my own concerns about that person or thing.

Last week, Trump signed an executive order that strips social media outlets like Twitter of some of their liability protection. Except that the relevant statute, Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, does not give the president any special powers to narrow -- or expand -- the liability provisions contained in the law beyond his constitutional duty to see that the laws are faithfully enforced. Just as he did the week before when he demanded that churches be reopened without any real legal role in opening or closing churches, Trump is singing from the King Canute hymnal, ordering the waves to recede.

When the president signed the faux executive order in the Oval Office, he was flanked by Attorney General William Barr. Barr functions like a big brother to the president, willing to fend off legal bullies who might obstruct his expansive understanding of Article II of the Constitution, which establishes presidential powers. "I have an Article 2 where I have the right to do whatever I want as president," Trump famously said last year.

Barr seems unwilling to explain to his chief that his understanding of his executive powers is not exactly correct. The attorney general is a fan of executive power, so maybe he just wants to see how far down the field Trump can carry the football. But Barr could at least point out, as his own oath of office compels him to do, that when Trump says "I have an Article 2," he misunderstands the nature of the document, that Article 2 belongs to all of us, as do the other articles, that the opening words of that document are "We the People" not "I alone can fix it."

When George Orwell penned his classic 1984, he did not have Barr in mind when he referred to Big Brother. His concern was totalitarian influence. While the world witnessed the horror of state control in the 20th century, we have also become increasingly worried about corporate control. This is not new. In the 1950s, social critics were deeply concerned and very vocal about the need to resist corporate-sponsored conformism and they celebrated a highly individualistic understanding of freedom. (Corporate marketeers took note!) Historian George Marsden wrote brilliantly about these critics in his book The Twilight of the American Enlightenment, which I reviewed here, and those critics were writing long before there was an internet!

The irony of all this is that the concern Trump raises is not entirely wrong-headed, but he is the last person on the planet to champion the issue. If the premise for the conferral of liability protection is that social media platforms only serve as conduits for other people's information, then they really should not have to spend millions of dollars monitoring what is said on their platform. If you do not like what is said on the street corner, you can't sue the street, or the corner. But, then, on what basis should social media platforms be marking some items as suspicious and others not? On the other hand, if they had an especially prominent client routinely spreading misinformation, how can they justify ignoring that fact?

Back in 1996, who would have thought a public figure, let alone the president of the United States, would be the one whose conspiracy theories were so outrageous they needed to be flagged by Twitter? ...

[...]

President Donald Trump, joined by United States Attorney General William Barr, signs an Executive Order on Preventing Online Censorship May 28 in the Oval Office of the White House. (White House photo/Shealah Craighead)

The president's behavior and comments are so untethered from reality, no one should be terribly surprised that the irony of his executive order is lost on him. But what is Barr's excuse? Has he also abandoned any concern for truth? Has he become that particular kind of sycophant who convinces himself that, without his presence, the unhinged principal would be even more reckless? He is not a former reality TV star. This is his second stint at the Justice Department. What moral calculation is he making to justify his involvement with this nonsense?

[...]

Well, at least he's honest about his bias.

Anyway, fine with Twitter's move, it's not censorship by any stretch of the imagination.

And yeah, from what I understood there's a lot more involved than just signing an order...they literally can't do anything before they make substantial changes to law and overturn years of precedent.

(Which US courts aren't fond of doing if I recall.)

The night I heard that president Trump was taking hydroxychlorithiazine (or however it is spelled) I grew suspicious and looked at my antianxiety medication. Sure enough, hydroxyzine. "Maybe this will end the nightmare of comparing myself to Trump and coming up with positives" I said to myself, and took a pill.

Nothing really changed.

There was also a time when I tried to internalize "be the change you want to see in the world" but I didn't do a very good job.
