I never got around to that one. Bakker started to really come across as an asshole the more I saw of him outside the books, and they were kind of miserable to begin with even when they were good, so I stopped paying him any attention.

Well, they're certainly tragic and brutal. I usually don't have any problem separating the author from their works, (L Ron Hubbard and OSC perhaps cases in point) but unfortunately the books just get a bit meh.

Anyway, reading the last one now, The Unholy Consult.

Well, after I finished Bakker, I went and re-read the "Rivers of London" books again. Busy on Book 9 (False Value) now, which is the latest(ish).

Earthsea is one of my top few favorites. Along with Malazan and Neverness. I recommend either of those if you haven't read them.

Wheel of Time is...variable. Very Happy Book 1-6 are great, 7-10 are progressively worse, then it picks up again in book 11.

I'm fine with the Sanderson conclusions.

I started reading CJ Cherryh's Foreigner, and got a few chapters in.

The problem is all the false starts.
You get into the story, meet some characters, then BAM- next chapter is a hundred years later or something.

I got tired of starting over in it and put it down, then googled the plot and found out the one I'm in is the *real* beginning of the book. I might pick it up again later today.

Never a good sign when you have to look up the plot of a book you're reading...just saying... Very Happy

Well, I wanted to know if the entire book was like that.

Turns out the last start I'm in is actually the main character for the next 10 books in the series, so I think the false starts are over. They were essentially an extended introduction.
