I think it might be time to lace up my metaphorical laces, and go for another complete re-read.
Have uk 1st editions of them all (all signed) (and of course the gap all signed) , but being lazy, think I might just get them all on kindle as well.
People talk about the commitment to read Steven Erickson… bah, let’s jump in and re-read the proper epic series.
Anyone else starting recently either re-read or first read.

I think Deer of the Dawn and Avatar were talking about a re-read recently.
Good luck - it will be epic no doubt! _________________ Hugs and sh!t!! ~ lucimay

IMO Take your time and savor it. Don't rush through parts to get to other parts. Re-reads are a chance to discover what you have missed before. _________________ * I occasionally post things on KevinsWatch because I am a fan of Stephen R. I finished The Last Dark this week and started Lord Foul's Bane today. Let's see what that earned knowledge brings to the table! |

Yes, I'm definitely planning a re-read.
I think I have a month before my order of the first Karsa book arrives, so I may abandon my current read (Conn Igulden's Rome series) (I'm bored with it) and get stuck into LFB. Been a few years since I read them last.
My only concern is I'm in the middle of a new Kenshi play-through which is eating up my spare time.

It's sad when you think about how one spends less time reading than one used to -- and the blame falls squarely on software in one form or another. _________________ * I occasionally post things on KevinsWatch because I am a fan of Stephen R. I agree about spending less time ready. Just my own fault hence planning the re-read. |

It's always been a struggle for me...it's either one or the other. I'm used to not reading for a few weeks when I get a new game, but I've had this game for a couple years now and it still periodically eats up big chunks of my time.
(Damn good game though. )

I finished The Last Dark last week for the first time and went back to Lord Foul's Bane on audiobook and Runes of the Earth on Kindle.
Scott Brick's reading of Lord Foul's Bane is outstanding. I've set it to 1x speed, which I don't normally do, so I can savour the language and the story. It's delightful and I'm looking forward to going through them all in order. I did have to use a VPN to buy it though. It's not available for the UK market. It's so infuriating, but thankfully the VPN worked really well. I even got a nice email from Scott thanking me for my purchase!
I'm also really enjoying Runes on Kindle, now that I've earned all the knowledge. |

He's a member here, albeit one who has been MIA for a while.
Can't do audio books myself. They're too slow, and I'm too easily distracted from listening if I try do anything else at the same time.

I feel like I'm doing a re-read at the moment, as my partner is reading the first chronicles for the first time. I'm very much enjoying her reactions to events chapter by chapter. Apparently Bannor is one of her favourite characters in literature (and she's very bookish), I can't help agreeing.
I'm also about to start DMing a third TCoTC D&D game this month so I may well be doing a full read-through myself. _________________ "Damn!!! Wildwood was unbelievably cool!!!!!" - Fist&Faith

Ahh so many interesting characters. Glad to hear your wife enjoying them. Mhoram, Foamfollower, Stave (one of my favorites), Pitchwife, Elena
So many more _________________ Not every person is going to understand you and that's okay. They have a right to their opinion and you have every right to ignore it. |

An opportunity to encounter it the first time, through the eyes of another - now that is pure joy. _________________ * I occasionally post things on KevinsWatch because I am a fan of Stephen R. Really? I've wanted to run a game set in The Land, but none of the players in my group are interested.
I've given a lot of thought to using the rules from The One Ring RPG and reskinning them for The Land. There's a lot there that should work pretty much as-is for the Covenant books.
Where/when in the Chronicles is your game set? |

I essentially replace Covenant with the player party. They normally go through the quest for the staff pretty much as written in Lord Fouls Bane - with a few extra combats thrown in and instead of automatically diverting to Soaring Woodhelven, they have the choice to send their soldier escort instead while they go into Mt Thunder (the greater good of the Staff of Law and being on a time constraint). After they regain the staff, therefore leaving the land and are resummoned, pretty much anything goes - but the main plot at that point revolves around discovering the fate of the Seareach giants, the Illearth stone and the beginning of the Illearth War.
As I say, it follows the books as closely as possible, although key characters change and new settlements are created as needed. (For example, in the first game Pietten was killed almost immediately after joining the party, so he couldn't get up to his despite-induced shenanigans). In the second game, the party picked up a shard of the Illearth stone and the final session of that game (as I only ran that game for 4 months) ended in an epic PvP combat which the good characters bested the corrupted player with a 50/50 dice roll.
Also, naturally Elena isn't the product of the party raping Lena, she's just a crazy powerful Lord who appears between the first and second quests and Trell/Triock don't want to murder them for no reason. That sort of thing. _________________ "Damn!!! Wildwood was unbelievably cool!!!!!" - Fist&Faith

I have an acquaintance who is reading TC for the first time, and I"m enjoying her impressions and thoughts. She's currently halfway through TWL.
Most people that I've encouraged to read the books can't get through them for a variety of reasons. I usually just thank them for giving it a try. _________________
