Since the film of the first book of this book series by Stephanie Myers is coming out soon, I thought to start a thread on the novels. Has anyone else read them? _________________ "O let my name be in the Book of Love!

I haven't but with so much buzz about them, I'm curious. Then again, it also looks like a tween version of Anne Rice, so I already suspect it will suck (pun intended). But I'm open minded enough to give them a read if someone I trust gives a good word on them. _________________

magickmaker and aliantha have read at least the first one, Zahir. I'm pretty sure they're mentioned somewhere here on the Watch, but I can't find it. I know it's discussed over on the Hangar... Let me search...
huh
I can't find the discussions on either forum. But I know I saw them... _________________

So why are they called "soap operas" if they make you feel so dirty while watching/reading them? _________________

I've actually written a full review in parts as I read the first book, on my Vampire Message Board. It was fun. Kinda like "Dawson's Vampire Creek" or "True Blood 90210". _________________ "O let my name be in the Book of Love!

I dunno, Stone. I thought they were a bit more adult than a 10 year old should be reading. . . but perhaps I am wrong? Anyone else care to chime in? _________________

I've bought them anyway! I will tell my sister to read them herself first though, just in case.... _________________ Aglithophile and conniptionist and spectacular moonbow beholder 16Jul11

I didn't read them but Magickmaker did. I think her final reaction was "meh".
I have no intention of seeing the movie. I've already had my maximum lifetime requirement of squeeing tweens, thanks. _________________

I've heard mixed reviews about Twilight. One of my friends loves it and went to see the movie. Another friend refused to read beyond the first twenty pages. After hearing about the contents of those pages, I'm not sure I want to read it either. _________________ "Persevera, per severa, per se vera." Persist through difficulties, even though it is hard.

At the risk of offending our resident Twilight fans: the only people I know who dig this are high school girls. Seriously. And not even they're guaranteed to think it has any merit. In fact, they'll probably even concede that they're shitty books that they nevertheless think are sexy and funny and just, like, awesome. That's Twilight. From my own perspective, I think it's sort of ridiculous that girls slightly younger than me are madly in love with a fictional vampire who is slightly creepy and airbrushed and vapid and oh yeah, can't have sex. Take a teenage guy's POV for what it's worth. |

Cailette really enjoyed the books and though the movie was pretty good.
I really tried to read Twilight, but good Lord I just found it gawdawful. _________________ "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." - PJ O'Rourke

LOL!! My sister and I have read them. We found them entertaining. As the story goes on it's gets really interesting. I like Meyer's take on the vampire world, a new twist that they can go out in the daylight and sparkle in the sun, instead of combusting...hehehe
Anyway, it's no where near as good as Rice's vampire books, but it was a fun read, especially when you just want to escape into something after the stresses of a long day.
My 9 year old sister, Chelsea and 8 year old sister, Imani are reading the first one right now and they love it. _________________ For Myles--

Still haven't read the books, and somehow got stuck watching the movie with my sister. The movie did not motivate me to be interested in the books. _________________ "Persevera, per severa, per se vera." Persist through difficulties, even though it is hard.

The movie was terrible. They got Edward all wrong. Turned him into a snivelling baby. In the books he's much more confident. The girl they got to play Bella was good tho.
I don't like movies made from books anyway...inevitably they mess with the story too much, add stuff, take stuff out...very few do the books justice. PJ did a pretty good job with LOTR, but Twilight was a mess. So try not to base your opinion on the books just by watching the movie. _________________ For Myles--

I never would have expected to like a teen vampire romance, but I found the series addictive. After reading the first 2 I had to delay the rest until I went on vacation, because I wasn't able to sleep until I finished the one I was reading.
A couple months later I reread the whole series.
I know people of all ages who are enthusiastic about this series, but most of them are female. My publishing partner, on the other hand, despised the heroine and refused to finish the book. She hated the way Bella threw herself without considering into deadly danger. _________________ "The universe is made of stories, not atoms." -- Roger Penrose |

Obviously it wasn't "as bad as the movie". The movie was low budget and also had to leave out foundational information because there wasn't time for it all.
However, none of it is intended for men. _________________ "The universe is made of stories, not atoms." -- Roger Penrose |
