|
|
I am more curious about hearing from the guys, as we are not normally known for caring for these types of movies (I know for me about 90% are boring and agonizing to watch). However, last night, Valentine's Day, me and my wife cuddled on the couch and watched one of my faves.
Now I am curious if I am not missing out on some good ones, but wish people to help weed out the 'bad'. So give me your top 3 romantic movies (and for the record guys, "Die Hard" is not a romance movie) :
Mine:
- Notting Hill
- Amelie
- Out of Sight (pushing it, I know) _________________ ~...with a floating smile and a light blue sponge...~ |

It's funny, I like a decent romantic film, but for the life of me I can't think of a single one I've enjoyed. _________________ "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Somewhere in Time. Christopher Reeve's best role, and Jane Seymour is stunning. _________________

Yeah. See I watched The Lake House the other day and I managed to get through the whole thing. Why? Because of the time travel/perception angle. Without some kind of Sci Fi spices thrown on top of the meal I can't stomach it. _________________ "I think and feel everything aTOMiC does only slower." |

This is the only romantic film I can think of that I liked. I was really impressed that it wasn't hideously sickly and cheese-ridden. |

I'm with you all the way on this one, I can't think of another one other than Casablanca offhand. _________________ But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. I had to google to see what the choices are. I was surprised by what some consider RM's. Michael? Rob Roy?? There was a romantic aspect to both, but come on. Almost every movie has a romantic aspect.
However mine might be:
When Harry Met Sally
Somewhere in Time

Heh.
Wow.
Damn.
Sorry Fist, you just took me back 23 years ago to my first date with Lisa Bowman.
Starman could quite possibly be the best date movie ever.
I need to go find my high school photographs..... _________________ "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." - PJ O'Rourke

Damn. There's another one. Big thumbs (and other things) up for The Accidental Tourist.
Funny how my high school date movies keep cropping up. _________________ "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." - PJ O'Rourke

Hmm, I've thought of one more I didn't loathe. So that brings it to two:
1) The Lake House (Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock)
2) Ever After (Drew Barrymore, some bloke) |

Usivius, I highly recommend Before Sunrise. It's a brilliant gem from 1995 that went almost unnoticed when it came out.
Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy are two strangers who meet by chance on a train in Europe and start talking. They feel a mutual connection, but they are on different paths. She is returning to Paris, and he has to catch a flight back to America next morning. So the two stop off in Vienna, and spend an intimate night wandering around the old city, knowing they may never meet again.
I thought that was the (sad) end of the story, too. But then in 2005 Delpy and Hawke reunited to make Before Sunset, which saw their two characters meeting up once again - also 10 years later in their time. It is a most worthy "sequel" to the original. It's not absolutely necessary that you see this film, but it's like coming back to meet fondly with a long lost friend.
These are two romantic movies, yes. Can't deny that. But - how shall I say it - they bristle with intelligence. The dialogue is sharp, and the interaction between Hawke and Delpy has a natural, unpretentious quality. It's an uncommon thing to see at the movies. I despise most romantic movies precisely because the actors in them are often so fake in their interaction that I don't believe the romance for one second. It's mostly glossy hair and makeup, and very little real feeling. But in watching Delpy and Hawke, I feel like I'm watching two "real" people who are really falling in love. What higher compliment could I give?
The architect of both films is Richard Linklater, who has become one of my most favorite filmmakers. To be fair, both Hawke and Delpy had major creative input in the scripts, which no doubt helped to make their respective characters that much more "real."
Well, I wasn't expecting to type out a mini-essay, but there you have it.
(Bah, who needs a 3rd film, just watch these two.) |
