Don't get a real IPOD unless you enjoy the status of having a real IPOD. Or unless you want to pay for music on I-Tunes.
No one can recommend one to you unless we know about how much music you want to store on it. Also, do you prefer no LCD display, a tiny one to see what song is playing, or a big one to watch movies? Do you want to plug it into a base station with speakers sometimes? Do you want to be able to clip a teensy one the size of a quarter to your shirt or carry a wallet size clunker around? Do you want one that plugs into your USB port like a flash drive, or one that you need to use a cable with?
I prefer flash mp3 players to disk drive ones, but maybe I don't know what the advantage of a disk drive one is.
You can just go to CNET and check out prices and reviews. _________________ * I occasionally post things on KevinsWatch because I am a fan of Stephen R. Donaldson; this should not be considered as condonation of the white nationalist propaganda which is posted far too frequently on this website. |

What WF said.
Is it for a gift for one of the kids? If so, then status of having an I-pod may truly make a difference. But otherwise, don't bother. _________________

I love my iPod, and I'd recommend it to anyone.
A lot depends on what you're going to use it for. I primarily use mine when I work out and when I'm driving. The sound quality is crap, so for me, it'll never replace my home system. I can't use a payer with a hard disc; I'll destroy it with all the moving around I do (running, cycling, etc). I've got a last-generation 8gb Nano which works perfectly for me. I see no point in getting one that plays video; the screen's too damn small.
Just a note, you do not have to buy from iTunes, you can use any download service you like. You will have to transfer the music into iTunes, but that isn't a big deal. _________________ "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. Yikes! Glad I said I don't know anything about them. I sure wasn't kidding.
Yeah, it's a gift for one of the kids. He says it's for music. He doesn't seem to know about the LCD options. I guess I'll not let him in on the secret, since I imagine it costs more that way. Heh.
So then... Ipod is the brand name, but there's plenty of generic ones out there? But what are they? I mean, Ipod is the brand name for what product? An mp3 player? _________________ All lies and jest

Yep, an mp3 player if he isn't interested in video. _________________

I 'inherited' a MP3 player that's years old but I couldn't live without it, and the equivalent today costs very very little (less than £20 here in uk)
If you go for a basic (and I'm no expert), a small screen to show you what song's playing, and at least 512 memory - that's enough for about 120 songs.
My sound quality is fantastic - I don't know if that's because I followed a friend's advice and bought myself some Stennhauser (?) MX500 headphones or if it's because of the player. But if it's for a kid, how important is quality....? _________________ Aglithophile and conniptionist and spectacular moonbow beholder 16Jul11

There are plenty of different kinds of players. Microsoft's player, called Zune, is better than what it was when it first came out, I read. It's between $150 and $250.
If he wants an ipod, get him a Nano, which should have more than enough room for the music he has. It has video screen as well, but I agree with Cail, it's a waste of time to watch video on them. They cost, depending on the model, between $150 and $200. _________________ But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. I have a 16gb iPod Touch. It is AWESOME!! I highly recommend it!! Nice big screen. I watch movies on long plane rides. I carry my music and pictures on it. And it can do webconnect.
$399 (at least when I bought it) _________________ He/She who dies with the most toys wins! Wait a minute ... I can't die!!! |

The Touch is nice, and the screen on that is certainly big enough to watch stuff.
I wouldn't buy a Zune, simply because I'm stuck using Vista, and Zune is by the same evil corporation. _________________ "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." - PJ O'Rourke

My wife has the U2 Special Edition 30GB iPod [special because it is black with a red doohicky, and an image of the bandmembers' signatures is engraved on the back]
Our entire musical collection fit on it [well over 100 CDs] with plenty of room to spare. Nowadays, she fills it up with free audio podcast downloads and listens to them while at work.
Me, I have a 2GB iPod nano with armband, and use it primarily when doing cardio at the gym, or jogging with the dog. I have to whittle down the music collection to my favorite 200 hundred songs or so, but I get by .
The big one is a hard drive, and needs a protector case and great care never ever to drop it - for that path leads to the iPod Frowny Face of [expensive to repair] DOOM!. The little one is much hardier, much more portable, and suits my purpose just fine.
For a kid, a nano should suffice. The new nanos this year have larger color video screens. Whether that is important depends on the use you anticipate it will get.
Whether its a matter of transferring a large volume of existing CD music from home, or buying and instantly loading new songa (at 99 cents a pop), iTunes is really the only way to get anything onto an iPod. It works for us.
Depending on how old the child is and how long the child has been asking about a music player (was it an MP3 player, or specifically an iPod?), you might decide to take this strategy: find a much less expensive MP3 player (under $30) this year, and see if that fits the bill... if they use the dickens out of it and still want more, get the more expensive one, with fancy features and such, next year. No need to spend $150 on an iPod if it goes largely unused...

Why hate Apple? They just want to sell stuff. Hate the people who can't live without popular brand names.
Aaanyway, I have a 30 Gb iPod which I got as a present from work last year. I never would have bought one myself as they're way too expensive. But I must say I enjoy it a lot.
I do hate iTunes, though, what a piece of crap. |
