Whine alert.
My upcoming biopsy for which I am traveling to the States solo, plus a whole pile of other stuff I won't bore you with, have cranked my anxiety levels through the ceiling. I am actually on meds for it for the first time in my life. I only take them at night, so I can actually sleep for more than 3 hours. This has been for a couple weeks. Yesterday I actually felt GOOD for the first time in... I don't know. So I baked a pie, made a fish soup, Stag and I went out for lunch, went for a walk (it was Independence Day so there was no school) and just had a great day doing whatever the flip I felt like doing.
Then today, I start getting a cold. Can I catch a break, here? Waah, waah, waah.
You may now return to your usual upbeat chatter.

So, I had to have a blood draw on Tuesday for an upcoming appointment to check my missing thyroid levels, and I went to the lady saying that I had a colonoscopy, a root canal, and hosted a slumber/birthday party for my daughter. I said I've been through hell this week, so do your worst.
She did. I have a huge bruise on my arm from the blood draw. Biggest I've ever had. Be careful what you ask for. _________________

Ouch. My favorite phlebotomy story involves an amateur tech who turned me into a pincushion trying to find a vein (my veins are smallish, but most can get one on the first try) - she ended up raising what looked like a small volcano on the back of my hand.
Hope you get the desired results back. And that goes for your test as well, Deer. _________________

Haha, I've had one of those. And then when she found the vein, she ended up pushing right through both sides. (I had septicaemia when I was a kid, they took blood from me like 5 times a day for a week. )

Definitely.
Went on a great hike over the weekend with the kids. It's one we've done before, but the weather was perfect and as the hike is very exposed, the heat normally wears us down quickly. It wasn't the case yesterday and we made it further than we ever have, and that includes before the kids were born and I was in shape (but smoking). We had a great time and there was none of the usual fighting and stupidity that often plagues our hikes once the kids get tired.
This is big for me as once I had my thyroid out, I didn't think I would be any good for hiking anymore. But now I'm feeling inspired to climb a fourteener with the kids, which is something I wanted to do right before having the thyroid out, but didn't find the time. So yay. I'll still have to work up to it a bit, as I'm sure the kids are pretty much ready to go now. I used to climb mountains as a kid when we'd come to Colorado from Kansas each year, and while it was exhausting, it usually was pretty fun. I expect I won't have many years left to do this, so I'd better get ready before next spring/summer. _________________

Ha! I had to look up "fourteener" - a mountain at least 14,000 feet high, is that right? If so, that's impressive! Looks like you're well on the road to fitness
I have a fourteen year-old and it seems to me a fourteen thousand foot mountain would be easier to manage than a 14 year-old, but perhaps that's just this last week...
Apart from that, I feel pretty unmotivated at the moment (hence why I'm here ) - I hope that changes as the week goes on. _________________ Hugs and sh!t!! ~ lucimay

I hope you get to do it, Cagliostro, for I bet you would find it very satisfying just like in the past! I'm an avid hiker, and also an ex-smoker, myself! |

I am far from fit, and I expect the first time we attempt a mountain, we'll be lucky to make it to the boulder field/treeline. But if we keep at it, it should be a ball. I just hope I don't find discouraging hikes the first few times. But I did find that the hike we usually take (called Dinosaur Ridge) is considered black diamond (most difficult) by the new sign they put up at the trailhead. We like it because most of the work is right at the beginning, when you still have your stamina, and then it levels off and is easy for a while before dipping into valleys now and again. So I guess we've been training on some nasty. The other hike we did was blue.....square is it?...kind of the medium difficulty. And we could definitely feel it. Only small patches of work, but usually at the wrong times that makes it feel more difficult than it actually is. They are not long hikes, and we can knock them off in a few hours because we are great procrastinators. Which is why I am looking forward to a long hike that has some challenge to, but more like the easier one. I wish I knew how to find hikes, other than randomly trusting someone on the internet that don't tend to describe things in ways that make sense to me. My criteria are amount of coverage for those hot days of summer when we tend to want to get out into nature, and what to expect difficulty. Straight up? Slight rock climbing bouldering skills? Scary places where you walking next to a precipice and you have to trust in a rope pitoned into the rock to get past? Also, I'd like to know if there are frequent streams that run along the course, because nothing pleases me more than a nice little mountain stream to briefly dip the feet into.
Maybe I should create that book. The Best Aesthetic Hikes of Colorado. _________________

Do it! I'm more of a cross-country hiker type. Some up and down is acceptable, but not into actual climbing. Give me a nice walk through the forest (streams and whatnot are a plus), with a good open view of the sky at night. I'm that weird person who will day-sleep on a camping trip to maximize stargazing time. _________________

Thing to do is look for a local group / forum / whatever for hikers.

Nah, f*** that noise. I've walked with hikers and in Colorado, it is easy to get in over your head with some of these people. I don't want competition. I just want fun. And spending time with the kids is a bonus, since they are totally into it too. Soon, I'll be the one holding them back.
My ex was a big hiker and climber and she would take me on some hikes with some of her friends who didn't smoke. I'd be gasping away, she'd be struggling somewhat, and her friends would disappear ahead on the trail, and I'd get left behind, and she'd get annoyed because she didn't want to leave me behind, but wanted to hike with her friends. Finally I stopped going altogether because her contained anger wasn't worth it. I liked her friends at first as they talked about exotic locations I'd never been to, and the stories started off fascinating, and then I realized after a while that what they were saying was shit, and that they were just trying to make themselves feel so continental, and they viewed me as a child because I thought parties were supposed to be fun. I have two modes at parties - silly fun, or ponder life's mysteries. I like talking deep stuff, but after I while I realized that they never did, and they never liked to have fun. So glad to see the back of them.
Sorry, went off on a tangent. Thanks for stirring up those unpleasant memories Av! _________________
